Not All CBD Balms Are Created Equal

Most of what is in any CBD balm is the base: waxes and plant oils that carry the extract and sit on the skin. What separates the best CBD balm from an ordinary one is how much cannabinoid extract goes in, what kind it is, and whether the label tells you. Plenty of balms list hemp oil that turns out to be pressed seed oil, which holds almost no CBD at all. Seed oil is a perfectly good skin oil, but it is not a cannabinoid extract. A jar that names hemp without giving a milligram figure for CBD, and a batch report to back it, is telling you something by leaving it out.

Ours start with full spectrum CO2 extract made from hemp grown organically on our own land, the same extract that goes into our oils. Supercritical CO2 draws out the cannabinoids with pressure and temperature rather than a chemical solvent, so there is no solvent residue to end up on your skin. The CBD salve holds 25mg of CBD per milliliter in both sizes, so the 250mg 10ml tin and the 750mg 30ml jar are the same strength in a different amount. You choose by how much you use, not by guessing at potency. Every batch is then tested by an independent lab before it is released.

A balm or salve contains no water, which is why it feels richer than a cream and stays where you put it. That makes it the format people reach for on dry patches, hands and heels, and for a slow massage at the end of the day. The honest trade-off is texture: a balm needs a minute of rubbing in and can leave a slight sheen, which some people like and others find a nuisance before getting dressed. If you want a lighter feel that absorbs quickly, a cream suits better. If you want something that stays put, a balm is the better buy.

What Is a CBD Balm?

A CBD balm is hemp extract blended into a base of waxes and plant oils, with no water in the mix. You warm a little between your fingers and massage it into the skin. A CBD salve is the same idea, and the two words are used for the same kind of product. A cream is different: it is an emulsion of oil and water, so it feels lighter and absorbs faster. Because a balm has no water, it also needs no emulsifier to hold the two phases together, which keeps the ingredient list short.

Applied to the skin, cannabinoids mostly stay in its outer layers rather than traveling into the bloodstream the way an oil taken under the tongue does. That is why balms are used on a specific area, and why they sit in a different part of the range from oils and capsules. It also means the milligram figure on a tin cannot be compared with the figure on a bottle of drops, since the two are used in different ways. Skin carries its own cannabinoid receptors, which is part of the reason researchers study topical CBD at all.

To use one, start with a small amount on clean, dry skin and massage until it softens in. A balm firms up in the tin and melts with body heat, so a stiff texture when you open it is normal and changes as soon as it touches skin. Try it on a small patch first if your skin is sensitive, and check the ingredient list on the product page if you know you react to a particular plant oil or wax. Keep balms away from your eyes and broken skin, and wash your hands after the mint salve.

What Can CBD Balms and Salves Be Used For?

Balms get chosen for the hands-on part of a routine: a few minutes of massage, or a tin in your bag for dry skin. The right one depends on where you use it.

We describe formats and situations here, not outcomes. Topical CBD is sold as a cosmetic in the US, so the list below sorts the range by where and how each product gets used.

  • Everyday Skin Care: The CBD salve in 250mg suits hands, elbows and heels, and the 10ml tin is easy to carry. It sits in our CBD skincare range alongside the face serum and body butter.
  • CBD Muscle Balm for Massage: The Mint Muscle Salve pairs full spectrum extract with mint for a cooling CBD muscle rub after the gym, a run or a long day on your feet. Find it in the recovery collection too.
  • Dry Lips: The 20mg CBD lip balm is the simplest place to start, and it is vegan. It goes on like any other lip balm, from an organic base, and fits in a pocket.
  • A Larger Jar for Daily Use: The 750mg salve is the same strength as the 250mg in three times the amount, for people who already use a balm every day and would rather reorder less often.
  • Compare Every Topical: If you want a cream, serum or deodorant instead, browse all our CBD topicals, where every format made for the skin sits together on one page.

If you are new to CBD, the 250mg salve is the easiest way to see whether a balm suits you, and our CBD for beginners collection covers the formats you take by mouth.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CBD balm?

A CBD balm is full spectrum hemp extract in a water-free base of waxes and plant oils, massaged into the skin. Endoca balms use CO2 extract from hemp we grow ourselves, and every batch is independently tested before it goes on sale.

What is the difference between a CBD balm, a salve and a cream?

A balm and a salve are the same type of product: oils and waxes, no water. A CBD cream or CBD muscle cream contains water, so it feels lighter and absorbs faster. Balms feel richer and stay on the skin longer.

How do I use a CBD salve?

Warm a small amount between your fingers and massage it into clean, dry skin until it softens in. Use less than you think at first. A little goes a long way because there is no water to dilute it.

Should I choose the 250mg or the 750mg CBD salve?

Both hold 25mg of CBD per milliliter, so the strength is the same. The 250mg comes in a 10ml tin and the 750mg in a 30ml jar. Choose by how often you use it, and start small if you are unsure.

Is the lip balm made with the same extract as the salves?

The lip balm is listed as CBD rather than full spectrum, at 20mg in an organic, vegan base. The full spectrum label applies to the two salves. Its batch report shows the exact cannabinoid content if you want to check.

Does CBD from a CBD balm reach the bloodstream?

Very little. Cannabinoids applied to skin mostly stay in its outer layers, which is why balms are used on one area. Oils held under the tongue and capsules are the formats that reach general circulation, so the milligram figure on a tin cannot be compared with a bottle of drops.

Why are the CBD salves made with full spectrum extract?

Full spectrum extract keeps the minor cannabinoids and terpenes that come out of the plant with CBD, while an isolate balm contains CBD alone. We make ours with supercritical CO2, which uses pressure and temperature instead of a chemical solvent. Read how CBD extraction works for the comparison with ethanol and olive oil.

What does the batch certificate for a CBD balm show?

Each certificate gives the full cannabinoid profile of that batch, including the trace THC, along with screens for pesticides, heavy metals and residual solvents. Certificates are listed by batch number on our lab testing page, so you can match your tin to its report.

Can a CBD balm show up on a drug test?

A drug test looks for THC metabolites. Topical use makes a positive result unlikely, but the two full spectrum salves contain trace THC, so it cannot be ruled out. Read our article on CBD and drug tests if you are tested at work.
