Can You Overdose on CBD

You may be a long-time fan of CBD or maybe you are just getting into using CBD and seeing some of the benefits for yourself. CBD is growing in popularity and is frequently used for many common ailments and as a tool to support well-being.

As with any substance though, the dose is important and it should be used in a responsible way. Let’s take a look at some questions that come up about CBD such as whether or not you can overdose and what effects does CBD has on the body.

Can you overdose on CBD?

Before getting into this question it should be noted that there are not many studies about the toxic levels of CBD. However the short is ‘yes’ you can overdose on CBD. Although unlike with other substances an overdose would not be life-threatening.

According to a CBD calculator, it’s estimated that an average man who weighs 180 lbs would have to ingest more than 33 tablespoons of CBD oil in one sitting to qualify as an overdose. For reference, a typical dose is one-eighth of a teaspoon. As with any substance, it’s important to be careful and not overdo it.

When using CBD there are several factors to consider to achieve the optimal dose for your body. Let’s take a look at some of them.

CBD: Finding the Correct Dose

CBD is generally well-tolerated and has a good safety profile, according to a report done in 2017 by the World Health Organization. In this report, it was also stated that CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or potential for dependence.

There are several factors to take into consideration when establishing what is a correct, safe, and therapeutic dose for your body. Some of these factors include:

  • Body and weight: Everyone has a slightly different body composition and weight which can have an effect on how CBD is metabolized.
  • Type of CBD: There are so many different forms of CBD on the market today including capsules, oils, tinctures, and gummies just to name a few. The appropriate dosage also depends on the form of CBD consumed. For example, taking a couple of CBD oil drops sublingually will have a different effect than taking a CBD capsule.
  • Biphasic Action: Depending on the dose, CBD can have different effects on the body. The lower doses of CBD have certain effects and the higher doses have different effects. It’s important to think about why you are taking CBD and what you want to achieve with it.

What effects does CBD have on the body?

CBD is not psychoactive, unlike THC. This makes it a great option for people looking for pain relief or to just feel calmer and reduce their anxiety. CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which regulates many daily functions like the immune system, sleep, and pain response. This is beneficial for supporting well-being and promoting relaxation at the right dose. As with any substance though too much can create a different set of symptoms.

Symptoms of CBD overdose include:

  • Anxiety

  • Dry Mouth

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Appetite changes

  • Psychosis

  • Drowsiness

  • Dizziness

How much CBD should I take?

As mentioned above everyone’s body is different and there is no one size fits all when it comes to the right dose. Scientific research has also not pinpointed any precise limits on how much CBD is too much.

However, you can experiment with CBD with confidence knowing you are unlikely to overdose or take too much. As a rule of thumb, first-time users should start with a small dose of CBD, even as small as one drop of oil or 5 milligrams per day, and gradually increase the dosage over time. Listen to your body and see how you feel. It’s also great if you can talk to your physician about what dose is right for you.
