Mushroom Extracts

Seven species as organic extracts in vegan capsules, not milled mushroom and not mycelium grown on grain. Lion's mane, reishi, maitake, cordyceps, chaga and turkey tail on their own, plus a five-species complex, each with the extract weight printed on the label.

Not All Mushroom Supplements Are Created Equal

This category has a labelling problem that almost nobody outside it knows about. A large share of what is sold as mushroom powder is mycelium cultivated on sterilised grain and milled up with the grain still in the weight, so a meaningful part of what you swallow is starch. Ours are extracts, and the extract weight per capsule is on the label, which is the only number that lets you compare one jar against another.

How the extract was made decides what actually reaches you. The compounds that draw research interest, beta-glucans among them, sit behind cell walls built from chitin, and human digestion does not open chitin. Hot water extraction does. That step is the difference between a supplement and an expensive way to eat powdered fungus, and it is why an extract and a raw powder are not comparable products even at the same stated weight.

What this page will not do is tell you what any of these species does to a body. In Britain no health claim has been authorised for any functional mushroom, because botanical claims were set aside when the register was compiled and were never resolved. Anyone making one is either not paying attention or hoping nobody checks. These are certified organic, they are extracts rather than milled substrate, and every batch is independently tested. That is the whole of what we can tell you, and it happens to be the part that matters.

What Are Functional Mushrooms

Functional mushrooms are edible fungi taken as a supplement rather than eaten as food, usually concentrated into an extract. The species that come up most are lion’s mane, reishi, chaga, cordyceps, maitake, shiitake and turkey tail. None of them is psychoactive and none is related to psilocybin species, which is worth stating plainly because search results for this category mix the two without hesitation.

Making something useful out of a mushroom comes down to extraction. Beta-glucans and the other polysaccharides that interest researchers are held inside chitin cell walls, and chitin passes through a human being largely untouched. Hot water breaks those walls open and draws the polysaccharides into solution, which is then concentrated and dried. Where a product states a standardisation figure, you can compare it honestly against another. Where it does not, you are comparing two species names.

Endoca uses organic extracts across this collection, in vegan capsules, with the extract weight per capsule stated. What is deliberately absent is any account of what the species do. That absence is the regulation working rather than us being coy, and it is the same reason a mushroom supplement making bold promises should read to you as a warning rather than a recommendation.

What Can Mushroom Extracts Be Used For?

The honest version and the marketing version of this answer are a long way apart. These species have a long record of traditional use and a genuinely interesting research literature, and neither of those things is an authorised claim.

What follows is how people build them into a routine and which product fits which habit. Read it as a description of behaviour rather than a promise about outcomes.

  • A Single Species: Lion’s mane, red reishi, maitake, cordyceps, chaga and turkey tail are each sold on their own, with the extract weight stated per capsule.
  • Several At Once: Mushroom Immune Complex blends maitake, reishi, shiitake, turkey tail and chaga, which is a good deal less fiddly than running five jars in parallel.
  • If Capsules Are Not For You: The mushroom gummies live in our Natural Gummies collection on this tree, alongside the hemp ones.
  • Something Outside The Fungi: Quina Capsules are made from wild-harvested organic bark and sit under Natural Vitamins here, because a bark is a botanical rather than a fungus.
  • Learn More: Read lion’s mane benefits, and mushroom coffee compared with mushroom supplements if you are weighing up formats.

If you are starting from nothing, the five-species complex covers the most ground for the least fuss, and single species make more sense once you know which one you actually came for.

FAQ

CBD Questions? We got you

What are functional mushrooms?

Edible fungi taken as a concentrated supplement rather than eaten. This collection covers lion’s mane, reishi, maitake, cordyceps, chaga and turkey tail as single species, plus a five-species blend. All are certified organic and none is psychoactive.

What is the difference between an extract and a powder?

A powder is dried and milled mushroom or mycelium. An extract has been through hot water extraction to concentrate the active fraction and open the chitin cell walls first. A great deal of what is sold as powder is mycelium grown on grain, with the grain counted in the weight.

Are these the same as magic mushrooms?

Not remotely. Psilocybin species are a different set of organisms and are controlled drugs in the UK. Nothing here is psychoactive, nothing here is controlled, and the two have no more in common than a potato and a nightshade.

Which species should I start with?

We would rather not steer you, partly because we are not allowed to and partly because it depends entirely on why you came. Lion’s mane and reishi are the two people most often arrive already looking for. If you want breadth rather than one species, the complex is the more sensible buy.

How many capsules is a serving?

Stated on each product page, and it varies by species because the extracts are not equally concentrated. The label is the reference, not the capsule count.

What are beta-glucans?

A family of polysaccharides found in fungal cell walls, and also in oats and barley. They attract most of the research attention paid to functional mushrooms, and they are the main reason extraction method matters, since unextracted mushroom material does not readily give them up

Why does chitin matter so much?

Fungal cell walls are built from it, the same material as an insect shell, and human digestion leaves it essentially intact. Anything held behind it stays there. Opening those walls is what an extraction step is for.

Fruiting body or mycelium, and does it matter?

The fruiting body is the mushroom itself. Mycelium is the network it grows from, and commercially it is usually cultivated on grain and harvested with the grain attached. Both turn up in supplements, the distinction is rarely made on labels, and it changes what you are buying.

Is there research behind any of this?

There is an active literature, much of it preclinical or in small human studies, and parts of it are genuinely interesting. It is also nowhere near the point where a regulator has authorised a claim in Britain. Both statements are true at once and we would rather say so than pick the flattering one.

Why does organic certification matter for fungi in particular?

Because mushrooms take up what they grow in with real efficiency. Heavy metals in the substrate end up in the mushroom and then in the extract. Certification covers the growing medium as well as the finished material, and batch testing closes the gap that certification alone leaves open.

What is standardisation and why look for it?

It states what proportion of an extract is made up of the compound group being measured, usually polysaccharides. Without that figure a label tells you the species and nothing about concentration, which makes price comparison meaningless.

Are the capsules vegan?

Yes, across the collection. The shells are plant-based and there is no animal-derived ingredient in any of them.

How is each batch checked?

By an independent laboratory, before release, for purity and active compound content, with certificates published rather than produced on request. In a category sold largely on unverified label claims, that test is most of what separates one product from another.

How long does a bottle last?

Capsule counts and serving sizes are on each product page. Most are built around a single daily serving, so a bottle generally covers a month, and people on a repeat schedule usually set it to match.

Can I take these alongside CBD?

People do, and several Rituals bundles are built on that combination. If you take prescription medication, ask your doctor before adding anything, which is advice about supplements in general rather than about these species.

Can I put several species on one delivery schedule?

Yes. Multiple products share a single schedule at a lower price than ordering individually, so a rotation across two or three species arrives together.

Do you deliver across the UK?

Yes, anywhere in the United Kingdom, in packaging that describes nothing. Deliveries into Northern Ireland can run slower where checks are involved.
