Not All CBD Oils Are Created Equal

We farm the hemp, extract it and bottle it ourselves, and we have done since 2010. Owning the whole chain is slower and dearer than buying extract from a broker, and the reason we stick with it is that a bought-in extract comes with somebody else’s word about the soil it grew in. Ours is grown without pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilisers, on ground we chose, from seed we selected.

Extraction is supercritical CO2 in our own facility. Pressure and temperature do the work that a solvent would otherwise do, so there is no residue left behind to purge afterwards. The raw oils are never heated after that step, which is why they still hold CBDa, the acid form the plant makes before heat turns it into CBD. Every batch is sent to an independent laboratory and the certificate is published against the batch number.

Where an oil earns its place over a capsule or a gummy is the number on the bottle. You decide the drop count, you can change it as you learn what suits you, and the label tells you what a drop contains. That matters more in Britain than most places, because the Food Standards Agency advises healthy adults to keep to 10mg of CBD a day, and you cannot hold to a figure like that unless you know what you are taking.

What Is CBD Oil

CBD oil is hemp extract carried in an oil so it can be measured in drops. The extract brings cannabidiol along with the smaller cannabinoids and the terpenes that came out of the plant beside it. Cannabidiol is one of well over a hundred compounds identified in Cannabis sativa L, and unlike THC it is not intoxicating, which is the whole reason the two are treated so differently in law.

How it is made comes down to what the maker is prepared to leave in. Endoca separates the extract from the plant with supercritical CO2, then blends it into hemp seed oil. Oils labelled raw are never heated afterwards, so CBDa survives in the bottle. Heat-activated oils have been decarboxylated, which turns that CBDa into CBD. Neither is the better one. They behave differently and people come back for different reasons.

Strength on this tree is written as milligrams per millilitre, which is the more useful of the two conventions. A 30mg/ml oil gives you roughly 1mg in a drop, a 150mg/ml oil roughly 5mg, and the 30% bottle roughly 10mg. Set that against the 10mg a day the Food Standards Agency currently advises for healthy adults and you can see why we print the per-drop figure rather than leaving you to work it out from a percentage.

What Can CBD Oil Be Used For?

People fit CBD oil into different parts of the day, and what any one person notices is genuinely their own. What we can set out is which oil in this range suits which kind of routine, and what is actually in each bottle.

Nothing below tells you how much to take. The label carries the milligrams, the Food Standards Agency publishes its own advice for adults, and the two of those together are a better guide than anything a category page could offer.

  • Starting Out: CBD oil 30mg/ml gives roughly 1mg in a drop, which makes it the easiest bottle in the range to keep track of.
  • Raw Hemp and CBDa: The raw oils keep CBDa in the extract because they skip the heating step. Our guide to the different types of CBD sets out what that changes.
  • Evening Routine: Natural Melatonin brings CBD together with CBN and CBG in one bottle. Read how CBD can affect sleep before you decide.
  • If Hemp Is Not To Your Taste: The chocolate mint oils are the same extract with flavour added, which is the usual reason people move to them.
  • Learn More About CBD: Start with what is full spectrum CBD oil, then read how CBD works if you want the mechanism rather than the product.

If measuring drops sounds like more effort than you want, our capsules fix the amount for you, and the comparison of CBD oil and capsules covers the trade.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CBD oil?

Hemp extract carried in an oil and measured in drops. The extract holds cannabidiol together with the minor cannabinoids and terpenes that came out of the plant with it. Endoca oils are made from hemp we grow ourselves, extracted with CO2, and bottled at 30mg, 150mg or 300mg per millilitre.

How do I take it?

Most people put the drops under the tongue and hold them there briefly before swallowing. Adding them to food or a drink works too and is slower. Every bottle has a marked dropper and states the milligrams per drop, so you can keep count.

How much CBD should I take?

We will not give you a number, and you should be wary of any seller who does. The Food Standards Agency advises healthy adults not to exceed 10mg of CBD a day, our labels tell you the milligrams per drop, and the two together are what you work from.

What is the difference between raw and heat-activated oil?

Raw oil skips the heating step after extraction, so it still contains CBDa, the acid form the living plant produces. Heat-activated oil has been decarboxylated and that CBDa has become CBD. We make both because they are different, not because one is better.

What does it taste like?

Green, grassy and a little bitter, closer to a strong olive oil than to anything sweet. The raw oils taste stronger because more of the plant survived into the bottle. The chocolate mint versions are the same extract with flavour on top.

What is the endocannabinoid system?

A signalling network running through the human body, made up of receptors, the cannabinoids the body produces itself and the enzymes that clear them. It was mapped in the early 1990s by researchers working out how THC acts. Work on how plant cannabinoids interact with it continues.

Why does it matter that the hemp is organic?

Hemp is a bioaccumulator. It draws metals and residues up out of the ground and holds them, and concentrating the plant into an extract concentrates whatever it took up. Growing it on land we control without pesticides is the only dependable way to keep that out of the bottle.

What are terpenes doing in the oil?

Terpenes are the aromatic compounds that give any plant its smell. CO2 extraction carries a good share of them across into the extract instead of stripping them out, which is why a full spectrum oil smells of hemp and an isolate dissolved in oil smells of nothing.

Is an oil absorbed differently from a capsule?

Held under the tongue, part of the oil is taken up through the tissue in the mouth rather than going through the gut first. A capsule is digested in full. Neither route is superior and the practical difference for most people is timing.

Is CBD legal in the UK?

CBD itself is not a controlled substance in the UK, and CBD products are sold widely here. The regulatory position is more involved than that sentence suggests: CBD food supplements sit under novel food rules run by the Food Standards Agency, and separate rules under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations govern how much controlled cannabinoid a product may contain.

What is the FSA public list?

A list of CBD food products linked to novel food applications the FSA has validated. The FSA is explicit that inclusion does not mean a product is authorised, only that somebody is seeking authorisation, and that it is not endorsing any CBD food product whether listed or not. No CBD novel food has been authorised in Great Britain yet.

How much THC is in Endoca oil?

UK rules count controlled cannabinoids by the container rather than as a percentage, and cumulatively rather than THC alone. Rather than quote you a figure that means something different in another market, we would point you to the certificate of analysis for your batch on our lab testing page.

Who should not take CBD?

The Food Standards Agency advises against CBD for anyone under 18, anyone pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive, anyone taking medication and anyone who is immunosuppressed. If any of those apply, speak to a doctor rather than to us.

Do you deliver across the UK?

Yes, to addresses throughout the United Kingdom, in plain packaging with nothing on the outside naming the contents. Northern Ireland orders can occasionally take longer where checks apply.

Can I set up a repeat delivery?

Yes. Any oil in this collection can be put on a repeating schedule at a lower price than a one-off order, and you can change the interval or stop it yourself without contacting anyone.

Where do I find the lab report?

Every batch has its own certificate, published on our lab testing page against the batch number printed on your bottle. That report is the document worth reading before any marketing copy, ours included.

What if the oil is not for me?

There is a 30-day money-back guarantee across the site and it covers opened bottles. Tell us and we will sort it. We would rather someone tried the gentlest bottle and decided against it than never tried at all.
