CBD Lip Balm: What It Does for Dry and Chapped Lips

CBD lip balm is a conditioning balm made with oils, waxes and hemp extract. It does what a good lip balm does, sealing moisture into the thin skin of the lips, with cannabidiol and the antioxidants that come with hemp extract added to the formula.

If you have chronically dry or chapped lips, or you live somewhere cold and windy, this is a straightforward guide to what CBD lip balm actually contains, how it compares to a standard chapstick, and how to use it.

What is CBD lip balm?

CBD lip balm is a wax-based balm infused with hemp extract. The wax and oils form the balm itself. The hemp extract carries cannabidiol, commonly shortened to CBD, which is a non-intoxicating compound that occurs naturally in the hemp plant. A CBD lip balm will not make you feel anything, and it is not related to lip products that tingle or sting.

Strengths in this category are small by design, because you are covering a very small area. Endoca’s balm contains 20mg of CBD per stick, which is typical for lip products. If the compound itself is new to you, this is a plain explanation of what CBD is.

You will also see it sold as CBD infused lip balm or CBD chapstick. These are the same product category under different names.

What CBD lip balm does for dry and chapped lips

The skin on your lips is thinner than the skin anywhere else on your face, and it has almost no oil glands of its own. That is the whole reason lips chap so readily in cold, wind and dry indoor air, and why they need help holding on to moisture that the rest of your face manages by itself.

Here is what a CBD lip balm does, in order of how much it matters:

  • It seals moisture in. Beeswax forms an occlusive layer over the lips and coconut oil softens the surface. This is the main job, and it is the effect you feel immediately.
  • It conditions rather than just coats. Many drugstore balms sit on top of the lips and give temporary relief without adding anything back. A balm built on plant oils and butters leaves fatty acids and vitamin E behind on the skin.
  • It adds antioxidants. CBD acts as a stabilizing agent for free radicals, the unstable molecules we are exposed to daily from sun, pollution and normal metabolism. Antioxidants in a topical product are there to help defend the skin surface against everyday environmental exposure.
  • It brings hemp nutrients with it. Hemp seed oil is rich in omega 3 and omega 6, along with vitamins A, E, B and D, all of which are established skin-conditioning ingredients.

Worth being clear about what it does not do. A CBD lip balm is a cosmetic product. It does not treat cold sores, cheilitis or any other lip condition, and lips that stay cracked, sore or bleeding despite regular balm use are a conversation to have with a doctor or pharmacist. It also contains no SPF, so if you spend time outdoors, use a dedicated sun protection product on your lips as well.

Lips also respond to more than what you put on them. Diet, indoor heating, how much water you drink and the habit of licking your lips all feed into how they look. If you feel you are doing everything else right and your lips are still cracked, a better balm is a reasonable next step.

What is in Endoca’s CBD lip balm

The full published ingredient list for the 20mg CBD Lip Balm is short, which is deliberate:

  • Coconut oil
  • Beeswax
  • Hemp seed oil
  • Lemon peel oil
  • Hemp extract (CBD)
  • Vanilla extract
  • Honey
  • Cannabidiol
  • Vitamin E

There are no preservatives and no artificial colors. It is gluten-free, GMO-free and cruelty-free. Because it contains beeswax and honey, it is not suitable if you avoid animal-derived ingredients.

The hemp extract comes from Endoca’s own farms and its own supercritical CO2 extraction, and every batch is screened for more than 200 pesticides along with heavy metals and mycotoxins. Those results are published, so you can check the lab report for the batch you buy.

CBD lip balm vs regular lip balm

Active additionsHemp extract, vitamin E, omega fatty acidsUsually flavor and fragrance only
What it doesSeals moisture in and conditions the skin surfaceSeals moisture in

The honest summary: a petrolatum balm seals your lips perfectly well and costs less. You choose a CBD lip balm for the plant-based formula, the short ingredient list and the hemp extract, not because the sealing is better.

How to use CBD lip balm

  1. Apply a thin layer to clean, dry lips. There is no benefit to layering it on thickly.
  2. Reapply through the day, particularly after eating, drinking or being outside in cold or wind.
  3. Apply again before bed. Overnight is when the balm has the longest uninterrupted contact with your lips.
  4. Resist licking your lips. Saliva evaporates and takes moisture with it, which undoes the balm.
  5. Store the stick somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight, so the wax does not soften.

The same balm works on other small dry patches, including cuticles and the corners of the nose in winter. For larger areas, a salve or cream is a better format, and our guide to CBD cream covers the difference.

Is CBD lip balm safe to swallow?

This is a fair question, because anything you put on your lips ends up being ingested in small amounts. The short answer is that the trace quantities transferred from a lip balm are not a safety concern, and the ingredients in this particular balm are food-grade materials such as coconut oil, beeswax and honey.

The amount of CBD involved is very small. A 20mg stick lasts weeks, so a single application transfers a fraction of a milligram and only some of that reaches your mouth. It is not a way to take CBD and will not produce any noticeable effect.

Keep it out of reach of small children, as you would any cosmetic, and avoid contact with your eyes. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking prescription medication, speak to your doctor before using CBD products in any form.

Frequently asked questions about CBD lip balm

What does CBD lip balm do?

It seals moisture into the thin skin of the lips using oils and wax, and adds hemp extract, vitamin E and omega fatty acids to condition the surface. The result is lips that feel softer and less tight. It is a cosmetic moisturizing product, not a treatment for any lip condition.

Does CBD lip balm get you high?

No. CBD is non-intoxicating, and the amount in a lip balm is very small. Even if some transfers to your mouth during normal use, the quantity is a fraction of a milligram and produces no intoxicating effect at all.

Is CBD lip balm better than chapstick?

Not automatically. A conventional chapstick seals lips effectively and costs less. A CBD lip balm gives you a plant-oil base, a short ingredient list, and hemp extract with vitamin E and omega fatty acids. Which is better depends on whether those ingredients matter to you.

How often can I use CBD lip balm?

As often as you like. There is no limit and no need to build up gradually. Most people apply it several times a day and again before bed. If your lips are very chapped, more frequent application in the first few days is reasonable.

Will CBD lip balm show up on a drug test?

It is very unlikely. Topical products stay in the surface layers of skin rather than entering the bloodstream, and the total CBD in a stick is only 20mg. If you are tested regularly and want no doubt at all, check the batch lab report for the THC content before you buy.

If cold weather or dry indoor air is the problem you are trying to solve, the 20mg CBD Lip Balm is the smallest and cheapest place to start. You can find it, along with the salves and serums for larger areas, in Endoca’s CBD skincare range.
