It leads because of centuries of traditional use as a calming herb and the largest body of preclinical sleep research, mostly in rats and mice. Strong human trials on sleep are still missing, so treat reishi as a gentle part of an evening routine, not a sleeping pill.

If you have searched for the best mushroom for sleep, reishi comes up first almost every time. Our Red Reishi Mushroom Extract is the one we suggest for evening routines too. But we want to be clear about why reishi leads, and where the evidence stops.

This guide covers what the research really shows, which other mushrooms people use at night, the sleep habits that matter more than any supplement, when to take reishi, and who should talk to a doctor first.

Why does reishi lead the list of mushrooms for sleep?

Reishi leads for two honest reasons: a long history of traditional use as a calming herb, and more animal research on sleep than any other functional mushroom. It does not lead because of large human sleep trials, because those do not exist yet.

Long traditional use

In traditional Chinese practice, reishi (called lingzhi) has been used for hundreds of years as a “tranquillising” herb for restlessness and poor sleep. That history is why it remains the first mushroom people reach for in the evening. Tradition is meaningful, but it is not the same as proof.

The most preclinical sleep data

Reishi has more lab and animal sleep studies than other functional mushrooms. Two examples are often cited:

Cui and colleagues, 2012: Rats given a reishi fruiting body extract for three days slept longer, with more non-REM sleep, at the higher dose tested. The effect seemed linked to an immune signalling molecule called TNF-alpha.

Yao and colleagues, 2021: Mice given a reishi mycelium alcohol extract for 28 days fell asleep faster and slept longer in a drug-induced sleep test. The effect depended on gut bacteria and was linked to serotonin, and it disappeared when the mice’s gut bacteria were wiped out with antibiotics.

These are interesting clues about how reishi might work. They are also rodent studies, often using doses and extracts that do not match what is in a typical capsule.

What do human studies say about reishi and sleep?

Human evidence is thin. There is no large, well-designed trial showing that reishi improves sleep in healthy adults.

The closest example is a 2005 randomised, placebo-controlled trial of 132 people with neurasthenia, a diagnosis that includes fatigue, irritability and poor sleep. People took a reishi polysaccharide extract at 1,800 mg three times a day for eight weeks. They reported less fatigue and better well-being than the placebo group. That is encouraging, but it measured overall symptoms, not sleep itself, and used a high dose of a specific extract.

There is also a twist. Memorial Sloan Kettering lists trouble sleeping as one of the reported side effects of reishi. A small number of people may find it does the opposite of what they hoped. That is one reason to start low and pay attention to how you feel.

Which other mushrooms do people use for evening routines?

Poria cocos and lion’s mane are the two other mushrooms you will see in sleep blends. Both have some research, but less than reishi, and almost none of it is strong human data.

Poria cocos

Poria cocos (also called fu ling) is a fungus with a long history in traditional Chinese formulas for calm and rest. In rodent studies, Poria extract and one of its compounds, pachymic acid, shortened the time to fall asleep and lengthened sleep, apparently through GABA-A receptors, the same calming system many sleep aids act on.

One 2024 human trial in 70 adults with sleep complaints found better sleep quality scores and longer sleep time after four weeks. However, the drink mixed Poria cocos with jujube seed and GABA, and the study was funded by a company with commercial ties. So we cannot say how much came from the Poria. Poria cocos is one of the mushrooms in our gummies range, but we do not make sleep claims for it.

Lion’s mane

Lion’s mane is better known as a daytime focus mushroom. A small 2010 study gave 30 women in menopause either lion’s mane cookies or placebo cookies for four weeks. The lion’s mane group reported lower scores for low mood and some everyday complaints. Sleep quality was measured, but the study did not report a clear sleep benefit.

So lion’s mane is not a sleep mushroom in any strong sense. Some people still like it as part of a calm evening routine. You can read more in our article on stacking lion’s mane and CBD for focus and rest.

How the evidence compares

Mushroom

Traditional use for rest

Animal sleep data

Human sleep data

Reishi

Long history as a calming herb

Several rodent studies

No strong sleep trials; one fatigue trial

Poria cocos

Long history in calming formulas

Several rodent studies

One small trial of a mixed formula

Lion’s mane

Not traditionally a sleep herb

Limited

Sleep measured in one small study, no clear benefit

Cordyceps, chaga

Energy and immune use

Little to none

None

What sleep habits matter more than any mushroom?

Your daily habits will do more for your sleep than any supplement. The CDC recommends that adults aged 18 to 60 get 7 or more hours of sleep a night, and its basic advice is simple.

Here is a short evening checklist:

Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, weekends included.

Keep your bedroom quiet, dark, relaxing and cool.

Put screens away at least 30 minutes before bed.

Avoid heavy meals and alcohol close to bedtime.

Limit caffeine in the afternoon and evening.

Move your body during the day and eat well.

Light and timing set your internal clock. If you want to understand why consistency matters so much, read our guide to your circadian rhythm and how it shapes sleep.

When should you take reishi for sleep?

Most people take reishi in the evening, about 30 to 60 minutes before bed, as part of a wind-down routine. There is no human research that pins down the best timing, so pick a time and keep it consistent.

A few practical points:

Take it at the same time each night so it becomes a cue that the day is ending.

Give it a few weeks. Animal studies used daily dosing, and any effect is likely to be subtle.

Start with one capsule and see how you feel, especially given that some people report trouble sleeping.

Pair it with the habits above. Reishi will not undo late coffee or a bright phone at midnight.

Does the type of reishi extract matter?

It can. Hot water extraction mainly draws out polysaccharides, including beta-glucans. Alcohol extraction pulls more of reishi’s bitter triterpenes. The sleep studies above used different extracts: the 2012 rat study used a fruiting body extract, while the 2021 mouse study used an alcohol extract of mycelium. So results from one type cannot simply be applied to another. Whatever you choose, read the label so you know which part of the mushroom was used and how it was extracted, and check the COA for that batch.

Is reishi safe, and who should talk to a doctor first?

Reishi is well tolerated by most people in short-term studies, but it is not risk-free. Reported side effects include nausea, dry mouth, constipation, dizziness and trouble sleeping.

Liver safety

LiverTox, the National Institutes of Health database on liver injury, rates reishi as a possible rare cause of liver injury. Some cases have been reported, mostly with reishi powder, and most people recovered within one to three months after stopping. Many of these cases were poorly documented. Stop taking reishi and see a doctor if you notice dark urine, yellowing skin or eyes, or unusual fatigue.

Possible interactions

Talk with your healthcare provider before taking reishi if you:

Take blood thinners or antiplatelet medicines, since reishi may increase bleeding risk

Take immunosuppressants

Take blood pressure medicine

Are having surgery soon

Are pregnant or breastfeeding

Have a liver condition

Are going through cancer treatment

How do Endoca’s evening products fit?

Our Red Reishi Mushroom Extract gives you 280 mg of organic Ganoderma lucidum extract per capsule, made with hot water extraction and sealed in vegan cellulose capsules. We position it for calm and the evening routine. You can check the Certificate of Analysis for each batch at lab.endoca.com.

If you prefer a ready-made routine, the Deep Sleep Recovery Ritual brings together a mushroom extract, zinc, vitamin C and our Night Time gummies in one evening bundle.

What about melatonin and CBD?

Some people like a different approach. Our Natural Melatonin with CBN and CBG is a plant-based option for evening use. Melatonin appears safe short term for most adults, though long-term safety is less clear, according to NCCIH. If you take blood thinners or have epilepsy, check with your doctor first. For a closer look at cannabinoids at night, read what research says about CBD and sleep.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best mushroom for sleep?

Reishi is the mushroom most often used for sleep. It has the longest traditional use as a calming herb and the most animal research on sleep. However, there are no large human trials showing it improves sleep. Poria cocos is a second option with mostly animal data. Good sleep habits will usually make a bigger difference than any mushroom.

Does reishi make you sleepy?

Reishi is not a sedative, and most people do not feel suddenly sleepy after taking it. In rat and mouse studies, reishi extracts increased sleep time, but those results have not been confirmed in good human trials. Some people report feeling calmer in the evening. A small number report trouble sleeping, so start low and notice how you respond.

How long does reishi take to work for sleep?

There is no reliable human data on timing. Animal studies gave reishi daily for three to 28 days before measuring sleep. If you try it, take it consistently for a few weeks as part of a steady evening routine and keep notes on how you sleep. If nothing changes, it may simply not be the right fit for you.

Can I take reishi with melatonin or CBD?

Many people combine evening supplements, but there is little research on reishi with melatonin or CBD together. Each can interact with certain medicines, including blood thinners. Start one product at a time so you can tell how each one affects you. Talk to your healthcare provider first if you take prescription medicine or have a health condition.

Is it safe to take reishi every night?

Reishi is well tolerated by most people in short-term studies, but long-term safety is not well studied. Rare cases of liver injury have been reported, mostly with reishi powder. It may also interact with blood thinners, blood pressure medicines and immunosuppressants. Follow the label, take breaks if your doctor suggests it, and stop if you notice any unusual symptoms.

[153

post-17439","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-cbd-guides

Best Mushroom for Sleep: Why Reishi Leads the List

<meta name="description" content="Reishi is the most studied mushroom for sleep, but the evidence is mostly animal research.
