How to make CBD oil? Here are 3 cool methods

CBD extracts are relatively easy to make yourself, with 2 out of the 3 standard methods able to be done with household items. So, if you want to learn about how to make your own CBD oil, read on!

CO2 Extraction

The first method, supercritical C02 extraction, can only take place in a lab using proper equipment. The process requires a machine that can compress the C02 with the plant matter to the point where the C02 turns into a mist like gas, attaching itself to all the cannabinoids, terpenes and other plant compounds, and separating these elements from the base plant material. Once the pressure is released, the C02 turns back into a gas, and all the compounds will have fallen away from the plant material.

Alcohol Extraction for CBD Tinctures

Most people making CBD oil at home from hemp or cannabis plants with higher THC content, use the alcohol extraction method. It is achieved by soaking the plant material into food grade, high proof alcohol, agitating the mixture slightly for a few minutes, and then straining the plant material, leaving behind the alcohol/ cannabinoid/ terpene mix.

From this point, you need to slowly ‘cook’ the extract on a very low heat, to ensure all the alcohol dissipates before you bottle your extract.

Tip: The best way of testing this is dipping a toothpick into your extract and passing a flame through it. If the extract sparks, there is still too much alcohol, and you need to continue ‘cooking’ your extract until it no longer sparks when exposed to a naked flame.

CBD isolate oil

The third way is slightly less traditional, however works nonetheless. This method uses CBD isolate or CBD crystals, and dissolves them in a carrier oil such as coconut oil. This version of CBD oil will be lacking a lot of fantastic terpenes, flavonoids, and other beneficial compounds. What’s wrong with that you may ask? Well, it’s all down to what’s commonly referred to as the entourage effect – a reported synergy between all the active compounds in the cannabis plant whereby the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. But despite this, CBD isolate oil can be a great way to get CBD into kids without the strong taste that usually accompanies whole plant extracts.

A lot of people ask us how to make CBD oil from hemp, thinking it is a different process, however, it is not! Hemp is simply a type of cannabis with less than 0.2% of THC inside.

How to make CBD vape oil

These days, there is a lot of conversation on how to make CBD vape oil. The obvious choice is to go and buy it online from a reputable company that uses only organic plant material. However, if you want to make a CBD vape oil at home, you will need some CBD crystals and a mix of PG (propylene glycol) and VG (vegetable glycerin).

The agreed ratio of PG to VG is 70:20 meaning 70% PG and 20% VG. Add in your crystals and shake well until dissolved.
