DOES CBD OIL GET YOU HIGH

Does CBD Oil Get You High?

Does CBD Oil make you high? That’s the million dollar question. Because it comes from the cannabis plant, most people assume you can get high from CBD. Turns out, you couldn’t be further from the truth, as the reality is you will not get high from CBD.

However, that’s not to say CBD doesn’t have any effect at all. Many people report an overall sense of well-being and relaxation. Now that doesn’t sound too bad, does it?

So if you can’t get high off CBD, what does get you high?

Ah right, so that would be THC, otherwise known as Tetrahydrocannabinol.

THC is the most abundant molecule found in the cannabis plant. Like CBD, it is known as a cannabinoid. Most recreational strains of marijuana contain high levels of THC and next to no levels of CBD.

The ‘high’ associated with THC can include dizziness, disorientation, lack of concentration, an attack of the giggles, lack of coordination, and an increase in appetite. Certain THC heavy strains also cause interesting sensations in the body, but again, with CBD there is no body high.

Why don’t you get high from CBD?

So here comes the science bit. It’s curious to think that two molecules that look so similar can bring about such different effects in the body. But it all boils down to how they interact with something called the endocannabinoid system.

You will be forgiven if you’ve never heard of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) as even most doctors are in the dark about its existence. Basically, it is a vital biological system made up of a complex network of receptors (CB1 & CB2) and cannabis-like chemicals that fit snugly into them. Scientists believe that the purpose of the ECS is to bring balance to the body and mind, playing a role in important functions such as sleep, appetite, mood, pain, memory, and reproduction.

It just so happens that THC fits perfectly into the CB1 receptors that are found in the brain and central nervous system, thus creating the ‘high’ effect, as well as affecting appetite and memory.

But what about CBD? Well, this is the interesting bit. Scientists have observed that while CBD doesn’t directly activate the endocannabinoid receptors, it does stimulate some other receptors in the body related to mood, pain, and inflammation. They have also found it to be a powerful antioxidant and neuroprotectant in preclinical trials.

But this lack of binding affinity with the CB1 receptors in the brain explains perfectly why if you asked the question – ‘Does CBD get you high?’ – the answer would be ‘no’.

Not only does CBD not get you high, but it can actually reduce the stoned feeling associated with high strength THC. This can be a useful tip for anyone who has ‘overdone’ their recreational use, or for medical cannabis patients who don’t like the high feeling associated with THC based medicine. In fact, some medical cannabis strains have a 1:1 ratio of THC:CBD so as to get the therapeutic benefits from both cannabinoids, but without the sometimes uncomfortable high.

Will CBD Get You High? – Hemp Vs Marijuana

This is a common area of confusion when it comes to the question of CBD. What plant does it come from exactly – marijuana, cannabis, or hemp?

Well to start off with, hemp and marijuana are just different names for the same Cannabis Sativa plant. Marijuana tends to have higher levels of THC, and hemp – sometimes known as industrial hemp – has less than 0.3% THC, and much more CBD.

In the past, hemp was used to make rope, clothing, paper and even one of Henry T Ford’s cars. But in recent years, it has come back into fashion as the source of most CBD oil products on the market.

So, if you know that your oils or extracts come from industrial hemp, there is zero chance that you will get high off CBD Oil.

If CBD hemp oil doesn’t get you high, what other effects are there?

This is the fascinating part: right now, there is a lot of scientific research happening across the globe examining the potential therapeutic effects of CBD. Although mostly taking place in laboratories rather than on human subjects, the results certainly look promising.

What scientists have found is that CBD has an anti-inflammatory effect – something they believe could be applied to numerous illnesses that have inflammation as their origin. Its role as a potent antioxidant is proving interesting for research into neurodegenerative and metabolic diseases. Plus, amazing results have been seen in cannabinoid’s ability to reduce seizures in epilepsy patients.

Here are some key areas of CBD research:

  • Anxiety – one of the few areas where trials on humans have taken place – CBD has been found effective in social anxiety disorder.
  • Epilepsyclinical trials have taken place using a pharmaceutical version of CBD on children with rare forms of epilepsy with promising results.
  • Chronic pain – many health conditions have chronic pain as a symptom. This includes everything from arthritis, fibromyalgia, inflammatory bowel disease and migraines. Studies suggest that CBD can reduce the pain associated inflammation.
  • Acne – CBD is being investigated as a natural alternative for problem skin conditions like acne, owing to its anti-inflammatory nature.
  • Addiction – for most people who think of cannabis as a drug, it’s hard to imagine that CBD might help kick addictions, but this is just what researchers have found.
  • Protects our brains – research is being carried out to investigate the neuroprotective effects of CBD on diseases such as alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Not only that, but CBD may improve recovery after strokes.
  • Cancer – CBD is being investigated in preclinical trials to see if it can prevent cancer cells from spreading.

So, before reading this article you asked yourself, ‘Does CBD Oil get you high?’. The answer is far from disappointing. CBD is much, much more than cannabis ‘with the fun taken out’.

CBD may well be the natural plant medicine of the future. It could hold some therapeutic solutions to many difficult-to-treat illnesses that have left doctors searching for answers. Who cares if CBD cannot get you high? Instead, it might just get you well and happy.
