11 Amazing CBD Oil Benefits
Have you heard about the health benefits of CBD?
Increasingly, scientists are backing up the personal success stories showing CBD oil benefits for pain, anxiety and even for quitting smoking.
But first, let’s understand exactly what CBD is.
What is CBD?
CBD is one of over 100 special molecules in the cannabis plant called cannabinoids. The most common cannabinoid is THC, which is what gets people high. Then comes CBD (Cannabidiol) which has no psychoactive effect.
The cannabis plant doesn’t naturally contain much CBD, and only presents higher CBD components when the plant has been heated.
CBD can also be extracted from industrial hemp, which is the same as the cannabis plant, only containing less than 0.2% THC. The benefit of using Hemp CBD oil is that it is legal in most countries in the world, and can therefore be bought worldwide.
How does CBD work?
In the 1990s when scientists studied how THC works in the body, they discovered that we have a biological system called the Endocannabinoid System. It is made up of a network of receptors in our brains, nervous and peripheral systems, and cannabis-like chemicals made by the body. The function of this system is to bring balance to our bodies and minds, and it has been likened to a dimmer switch – turning up activity if there isn’t enough and turning down if there is an excess.
Scientists know that some of the CBD health benefits occur due to its interaction with the Endocannabinoid System. Although, unlike the THC molecule, which fits perfectly into the endocannabinoid receptors, CBD’s action is more subtle. This is because CBD activates other non-cannabinoid receptors related to pain, inflammation, and anxiety.
Can CBD strengthen the Endocannabinoid system?
In order to stay healthy, our endocannabinoid system needs to be working efficiently. Dr Ethan Russo, an American neurologist and cannabinoid researcher, thinks that many ‘modern’ and difficult to treat illnesses such as fibromyalgia, IBS and migraines may be due to an endocannabinoid deficiency. He suggests that one of the most interesting health benefits of CBD oil is to boost our endocannabinoid system, returning us to optimum health.
CBD Benefits List
Some general CBD hemp oil benefits include its lack of toxicity, few reported side effects and non-psychoactive nature. It’s not surprising then that there’s currently great excitement in the scientific and medical community about the potential benefits of CBD hemp oil.
We ourselves cannot make any claims about the medical benefits of CBD, but we would like to share with you the latest scientific research into the benefits of CBD.
1. CBD reduces seizures
Perhaps the first exposure that CBD had in the public domain was through the CNN documentary Weed. Hosted by Dr Sanjay Gupta, he met Charlotte Figi, the four year old girl suffering up to 400 hundred epileptic seizures a day. Charlotte did not respond to conventional medicine and her future looked bleak. Until that is, her parents began giving Charlotte CBD oil, after which her seizures reduced to almost zero.
Science has now caught up with these anecdotal reports, with studies showing how a 98% CBD extract called Epidiolex can elicit a significant reduction in the number of seizures in children with drug resistant epilepsy conditions.
2. CBD eases anxiety
For thousands of years people have consumed cannabis to relax, and it’s quite possible that this effect was due to CBD found in the plant. This is because CBD activates the serotonin 5HT1-A receptor, found in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and amygdala – areas in the brain involved in mood and anxiety disorders.
Some studies involving CBD have been carried out on humans suffering from social anxiety. One interesting study on CBD oil health benefits was based on CBD being taken before a public speaking test. The results showed that it “significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment and discomfort in their speech performance, and significantly decreased alertness in their anticipatory speech.”
Another scientific investigation looked at the neuroimaging of ten people with anxiety who had taken CBD. Administering CBD affected “activity in limbic and paralimbic brain areas,” caused “significantly decreased subjective anxiety”.
3. CBD can relieve pain
One of the most common hemp CBD oil benefits reported by scientists is its ability to reduce pain in conditions such as arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, headaches and fibromyalgia.
One reason is because CBD binds to the TRPV-1 receptor, which is known to control pain and inflammation in the body.
In fact, this anti-inflammatory activity is perhaps one of the most significant CBD benefits. Studies show that CBD reduces the production of proinflammatory cytokines, the signalling proteins made by immune cells that produce the inflammatory response.
Inflammation isn’t bad per se, it’s the body’s natural response to heal itself or to eliminate invaders. But in cases such as autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, this inflammatory process becomes over stimulated. There is much research currently taking place examining CBD’s anti-inflammatory effect on a number of illnesses, and so we are yet to understand CBD’s full anti-inflammatory benefits.
4. CBD has anti-cancer effects
While it’s true that research into cannabinoids and cancer is very promising, most so far have been conducted in preclinical settings on animal models or petri dishes. In this laboratory setting, scientists have seen that CBD, when paired with the cancer cell’s CB2 cannabinoid receptor, is involved with the destruction of cancer cells.
Another study on mice found that CBD may prevent cancer cells from spreading by shutting down the Id-1 gene. A paper published in the British Journal of Pharmacology found that CBD can prevent new blood cells growing into tumours, declaring that “CBD has potential as an effective agent in cancer therapy.”
So, right now it is not possible to say that the CBD oil benefits list includes curing cancer, but certainly preclinical research looks promising, and more clinical trials on humans are needed.
5. CBD is a powerful antioxidant
One of the most far reaching CBD cannabis benefits is its status as a potent antioxidant. This is because most age-related illnesses are caused by oxidative stress, a natural process that occurs when waste products called free radicals are generated. Free radicals can also result from exposure to stressors like cigarette smoke and pollution, as well as chemicals we take into our bodies such as fluoride and pesticides.
Our bodies produce natural antioxidants to combat the damage caused by free radicals, which if unchecked leads to diseases such as diabetes, heart problems, neurodegenerative disease, and even cancer.
Unfortunately, with the high levels of stress caused by a modern lifestyle, we may find that we occasionally need a little extra helping hand to balance out. Studies show CBD to be an even more powerful source of antioxidants than vitamin C and E.
Something even recognised by the United States Federal Government that issued a patent for CBD, stating it as ‘useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of a wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.’
6. CBD protects our brains
Many people are surprised to hear that possible hemp CBD benefits include protecting our brains. It is in part due to the antioxidant effect. Many neurodegenerative diseases are caused by toxicity in our brains, and the accumulation of a neurotransmitter called glutamate. In studies on mice, CBD has been found to reduce glutamate toxicity, as well as lessening neural inflammation.
Not only that, but in cases where patients have suffered a stroke, CBD’s ability to block the toxins produced when the brain is starved of oxygen, may even limit the damage caused.
One study found that ‘CBD had a potent and long-lasting neuroprotective effect and prevented progressive post-ischemic injury,’ and ‘that repeated treatment with CBD from 1 day or 3 days after cerebral ischemia improved the functional deficits, such as neurological score and motor coordination, and survival rates.’
7. CBD may help reduce psychotic symptoms
Another one of the most surprising Hemp CBD benefits to be discovered is the possible antipsychotic effect it ellicits.
In a stage 2 randomised trial carried out in 2008, 42 in patients with schizophrenia received 200mg – 800mg of CBD over one month. The subjects experienced a significant improvement in their symptoms after taking CBD, which scientists think was caused by an increase in the body’s natural cannabis-like chemicals.
8. CBD can help reduce cravings in addiction
For those who consider any form of cannabis to be a drug, they may be surprised to hear that studies suggest CBD can reduce cravings in addiction.
In one double blind study, heroin addicts were given CBD over 3 days. Their level of craving compared to the placebo was significantly reduced, with the effect lasting up to 7 days after treatment.
Tobacco smokers also experienced CBD cannabis oil benefits when they used a CBD inhaler every time they had the urge to smoke a cigarette. Compared to the placebo group, they smoked 40% less cigarettes.
9. CBD may improve diabetes
One of the causes of type 2 diabetes, otherwise known as insulin resistant diabetes, is chronic inflammation. Scientists are very interested in CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties as a way of slowing down the onset of diabetes.
In one study on diabetic mice, pro-inflammatory cytokines were reduced after administering CBD. Another preclinical trial found CBD to lessen the incidence of diabetes from 86% to 30% in rodents.
10. CBD can improve skin problems
CBD rich hemp oil benefits are not just limited to the inside of our bodies. It has also been found to have therapeutic effects on skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema.
This is due to CBD regulating the production of oil in the skin, as well as the growth of epidermal cells.
Studies suggest that CBD extract benefits also include aiding the healing process due to its antibiotic qualities.
11. CBD can promote heart health
Heart disease is one of the biggest killers in modern society. Once again, chronic inflammation and oxidative stress directly contribute to the development of heart disease and high blood pressure.
Researchers also think CBD may lessen ‘vascular tension.’ In a study called ‘Is the cardiovascular system a therapeutic target for cannabidiol?,’ scientists concluded that ‘preclinical data appear to support a positive role for CBD treatment in the heart, and in peripheral and cerebral vasculature.’
So, it’s clear then that the potential health benefits of CBD Hemp Oil are causing quite a stir in the scientific community. Right now, much of these exciting results are just being explored in laboratories, and are yet to be studied on humans.
But despite this, I’m sure you’ll agree, the future of CBD and our health looks very bright indeed.
