What scientists say about CBD for anxiety
Research into CBD and anxiety is one of the few areas where studies have been conducted on humans subjects, and not just on animal models. Researchers found that “pretreatment with CBD significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment and discomfort in their speech performance, and significantly decreased alertness in their anticipatory speech.”
This compared to the placebo group who showed “higher anxiety, cognitive impairment, discomfort, and alert levels when compared with the control group.”
Social anxiety disorder sufferers were the subjects of another research paper published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology examining what parts of the brain are affected when the participants took CBD. Using neuroimaging techniques, they found that CBD ‘was associated with significantly decreased subjective anxiety.’ They also observed ‘activity in limbic and paralimbic brain areas’ – the parts of the brain responsible for our emotions and of memory formation.
Another interesting potential CBD and anxiety effect relates to the cannabinoid’s ability to boost our own endocannabinoid levels. One of the key cannabis-like chemicals produced by the body is called anandamide, named after the sanskrit word for bliss. Scientists have noticed depleted anandamide levels in anxiety and depression related conditions. Anandamide is only produced when the body needs it, and is quickly broken down in the body by an enzyme called Fatty Acid Amide Hydrolase. But scientists have seen that CBD inhibits FAAH production, allowing for more anandamide to be present in the body. So in this way, by strengthening the endocannabinoid system, CBD may help protect against stress.
So while scientists are definitely not saying CBD cures anxiety, it is certainly true that research so far looks promising that it might reduce symptoms. This combined with anecdotal reports, suggests that CBD oil and anxiety warrant further examination.
