CBD Oil for Anxiety

CBD, a non-psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant, is currently creating a buzz due to its broad reaching effects on the body. In particular, CBD to treat anxiety is fast gaining in popularity as a therapeutic possibility.

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a modern day epidemic, with 60 million people in Europe alone suffering from anxiety disorders, with anxiety affecting a further 20% of the population in the United States.

Types of anxiety include:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Panic Disorder
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Social Phobia (or Social Anxiety Disorder)

All can be debilitating and extremely life limiting. For that reason many people turn to prescribed antidepressants such as SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors), or anti anxiety pills such as Valium or Xanax. Not only are these medications addictive, but can in some circumstances can even make anxiety symptoms worse.

It’s no wonder then that anxiety sufferers are looking for more natural alternatives, and are beginning to ask the question: ‘Does CBD help anxiety?

But before we answer this question, let’s find out more about CBD.

CBD and the endocannabinoid system

CBD, otherwise known as Cannabidiol, is a natural molecule found in the cannabis plant. Unlike its rather more famous sibling THC, CBD doesn’t create a high feeling. As a result, you’re unlikely to find much CBD in recreational strains of cannabis.

How does CBD work?

Scientists have discovered that plant cannabinoids like THC and CBD interact with a biological system in the body called the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

The ECS is a complex network of cannabinoid receptors and cannabis-like chemicals that work together to bring about balance in the body and mind.

THC fits perfectly into the CB1 receptors in the brain and central nervous system, explaining why it causes the ‘high’ effect. But CBD’s action is somewhat more subtle. That’s because instead of binding directly to the endocannabinoid receptors, CBD activates other receptors in the body, including the 5HT1-A serotonin receptor found in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and amygdala – just the areas in the brain implicated in anxiety disorders.

Scientists believe CBD’s interaction this serotonin receptor explains what they have seen in their research: i.e. that CBD oil is good for anxiety.

What scientists say about CBD for anxiety

Research into CBD and anxiety is one of the few areas where studies have been conducted on humans subjects, and not just on animal models. While trials still haven’t reached the randomised, double blind, controlled stages required to pass standard pharmaceutical drugs, a number of small studies have been conducted, in particular looking at CBD and Social Anxiety Disorder.

In one small trial, 24 people diagnosed with Social Anxiety Disorder took either CBD or a placebo. Next, they had to perform a simulated public speaking test. Researchers found that “pretreatment with CBD significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment and discomfort in their speech performance, and significantly decreased alertness in their anticipatory speech.”

This compared to the placebo group who showed “higher anxiety, cognitive impairment, discomfort, and alert levels when compared with the control group.”

Social anxiety disorder sufferers were the subjects of another research paper published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology examining what parts of the brain are affected when the participants took CBD. Using neuroimaging techniques, they found that CBD ‘was associated with significantly decreased subjective anxiety.’ They also observed ‘activity in limbic and paralimbic brain areas’ – the parts of the brain responsible for our emotions and of memory formation.

Another interesting potential CBD and anxiety effect relates to the cannabinoid’s ability to boost our own endocannabinoid levels. One of the key cannabis-like chemicals produced by the body is called anandamide, named after the sanskrit word for bliss. Scientists have noticed depleted anandamide levels in anxiety and depression related conditions. Anandamide is only produced when the body needs it, and is quickly broken down in the body by an enzyme called Fatty Acid Amide Hydrolase. But scientists have seen that CBD inhibits FAAH production, allowing for more anandamide to be present in the body. So in this way, by strengthening the endocannabinoid system, CBD may help protect against stress.

So while scientists are definitely not saying CBD cures anxiety, it is certainly true that research so far looks promising that it might reduce symptoms. This combined with anecdotal reports, suggests that CBD oil and anxiety warrant further examination.

2. Vaping CBD for anxiety

For a fast action effect, many people choose CBD vape oil for anxiety, using either an e-cigarette or a vaporizer. That’s because this is the most rapid way of getting CBD into the body, as it goes straight via the lungs into the bloodstream. Many people buy pre-mixed vape oil or make their own using pure CBD crystals.

3. CBD capsules for anxiety

While perhaps the most familiar method for taking medication or supplements, CBD pills or capsules are the least effective way of taking CBD for anxiety and depression. Because the CBD has to pass through the digestive process, it takes longer to take effect, and less CBD is absorbed into the bloodstream.

We are not in a position to tell you how many mg of CBD for anxiety is best, as everyone is unique and reacts differently. But as a rule of thumb, we recommend starting on a low dose and then building up gradually.
