WHSV3 Harrison, Virginia News covered the rally for the legalization of marijuana in Virginia held in Charlottesville. Those who attended had one message: “legalize it”. With banners reading, “It is just a herb, legalize it.”
What rally attendees told WHSV3
Many people supporting the rally argued that marijuana should never have been illegal, as hemp is one of the best food sources and hemp is also one of the best medicines. Hemp is the strain of marijuana which contains other cannabinoids rather than THC. THC or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol marijuana’s main mind-altering ingredient is insignificantly low in hemp while it contains more than 100 other cannabinoids.
There is a growing interest in the marijuana chemical cannabidiol (CBD), a cannabinoid that does not affect the mind or behavior, to treat certain conditions such as cancer, glaucoma and seizure. The body also produces its own cannabinoid chemicals. They play a role in regulating pleasure, memory, thinking, concentration, body movement, awareness of time, appetite, pain, and the senses, but don’t make us high.

What do the protesters hope to achieve?
Rally organizer Jes Vegas’ objectives are clear: she wants to spread awareness of the importance of cannabis liberation, specifically marijuana legalization, to make medical marijuana accessible to all, and encourage local political advocacy.
The rally was held at the Freedom Wall to remind supporters that their voice mattered. “It is very important for people to speak up and share their message with their legislators,” said Vegas. “That is the most proactive way in this movement.” The rally was also about changing the misconception that marijuana just makes people high while it is actually saving lives, said Vegas.
Another attendee Lennice Werth hoped it would bring awareness and change racial disparities in Virginia’s jails as marijuana arrests are going down in most states because they are moving forward with legalization. In Virginia, on the other hand, they are going up because of racial disparities, and are part of police problems particular in communities of color.
The many uses of hemp
Legal hemp could have many benefits for the US. Hemp has been recognized as one of the super foods. It is very high in protein, has all the essential amino acids and contains an ideal ratio of omega 3, 6 and 9. It is the oil obtained from the plant that is used as medicine or as ‘medicinal marijuana’ without the high.
The value of Hemp as a cash crop is under debate and some states like Maine are granting licenses to grow it. So far, only the Passamaquoddy Tribe and a Portland resident have received permission to growwhat would be the state’s first licensed crops of industrial hemp. Currently, hemp is imported legally from other countries to meet the demand for the oil and fiber.
Steven Zeno of Portland was not deterred from applying for a license and has planted hemp seeds from a Colorado food bank on a one-acre plot in Monmouth. He formed the Maine Hemp Association and launched a campaign to buy the equipment needed to harvest and process hemp, a non-psychoactive variety of cannabis. His vision is that farmers will eventually share seeds and machines and produce oil, fuel pellets, protein and plastic.
Does CBD oil get you high? And what about THC?
Although the answer to the question “Does CBD oil get you high?” is clearly a “No,” THC is also enjoying attention for its potential uses. The protestors want to see both hemp and THC-rich cannabis being made available to those who want to try medical marijuana when pharmaceuticals have let them down.
