India: newspaper The Hindu interviewed a 28-year-old resident of Cox Town in Bengaluru, who grows marijuana. This could put him behind bars for 15 years even though it is not for smoking.
The mother of a close friend of his was diagnosed with Stage III colorectal cancer last year. He started searching for an alternative cure. “I found several references to cannabis oil for cancer as a potential cure,” he says. He then read extensively about what he calls an “ancient wonder medicine”.
Marijuana oil for cancer patients in hope of a cure
Marijuana oil can be found, but it is not easy and extremely expensive. So, he decided to make it himself. He ordered seeds online and soon he had plants growing in pots on his terrace. He has made the oil twice, his friend’s mom is feeling much better and he can see she looks much better. Most significantly, she is not feeling nauseous.
He is not the only one who beliefs in the medical properties of marijuana. Kiran also supplies his friend with marijuana oil after he was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer four months ago. Kiran comes from a family with diabetes, his blood sugar is well controlled by marijuana, he believes.
The key ingredients in cannabis oil, CBD or cannabidiol, or THC is what people turn to as last resort after conventional treatments have failed them. It is not completely clear how it works but scientific opinion suggests it plugs onto receptors of nerve cells.
“There are not enough studies done on this, even in the West, to help reach a definite conclusion,” says Dr. Radheshyam Naik, consultant medical oncologist from HCG hospital, a specialty cancer hospital in Bengaluru.
Because of marijuana’s illegal status there are no regulations on treatment and dosage or studies on side effects.
Viki Vaurora (25) an activist for the Great Legalization Movement (GLM) says it is a great injustice to a medicinal plant. The plant is well documented in Atharvaveda dating back 3 500 years. It should not be a crime to grow marijuana for medical use. It was banned in 1985, a lobby crime according to him. Ayurvedic practitioners treated practically every disease with marijuana-based medicines.
Vaurora prepares cannabis oil and sees it as a humanitarian service, he charges only what it costs to make. Marijuana helped him overcome severe pain caused by a cyst in his hip, and saved him from being in a wheelchair.
Caregivers turn to marijuana oil as a last resort when patients have been declared incurable. Hema Sundar is a prime example. Her 78-year-old mother’s pulmonary fibrosis suddenly accelerated at a frightening rate.
She found Vaurora online, and he helped her to start with cannabis oil treatment. Today her mom can go up to three hours without oxygen.

Marijuana oil for cancer patients is definitely a support
Dr. Naik points out cannabis oil works well as a support to cancer treatment. It is known to reduce nausea, increase appetite and augment a feeling of wellbeing in a patient undergoing chemotherapy. As for the possibility of a cure, it has not been ruled out, but it is unclear whether it actually can.
To conclude, legalization lies in the government’s hands. Marijuana oil for cancer patients cannot cause harm and may be of help, but it is wisest to continue with conventional treatments and not try to replace them with an unproven medicine.
