Hashish Oil: Exercise caution
Before we can begin discussing the dangers of Hashish Oil, we need to make one important distinction: not all oils from Cannabis are, in fact, hashish oils. In common parlance ‘Hashish Oil’ is the oil extracted from high-THC variants of Cannabis, while ‘Hemp Oil’ is extracted from hemp, which contains a great deal of CBD and very little THC.
In practical terms, this means that Hashish Oil can and will make you high, and Hemp Oil won’t, but there is more than this to be taken into consideration.

Hashish Oil can be Harmful
Whilst smoking or ‘vaping’ hashish oil cannot possibly kill you, taking it orally could, but only if you drink a huge volume. THC at a rate of 30mg per kilogram of body mass is lethal. Admittedly, you’d have to drink quite a lot of hashish oil before it gets that far – there is usually around 30% THC in hashish oil – but it’s still a good reason to pause for thought.
In addition, processes such as alkali washing can increase THC levels above 50%. I personally know of at least two cases in which people accidentally spilled some hash oil and licked up the excess, only to find themselves in a very bad way. One of them even called his son to explain what should be done after his death! He didn’t die, but it couldn’t have been a pleasant feeling!
This said, there have been no recorded cases of physically dangerous THC overdoses from Hashish Oil (although there have been frightening and uncomfortable ones), but SF Weekly warns that damage can be caused by neurotoxins left behind after butane extraction. This is a very common extraction method, and it is used in the extraction of both Hashish and Hemp oils.
We also have to remember that Hashish Oil is way stronger than pot, and there is one anecdotal case of a man ‘passing out’ and fatally hitting his head after using Hashish oil. Weather this is true or not, it certainly is true that using very strong concentrations of THC can make you pass out, or feel as if you are losing control over your body.
Is Hemp oil Dangerous?
Bearing in mind that extraction techniques, as well as the origins of the plant material are important considerations, it is absolutely impossible to get any of these unpleasant side effects from a high quality hemp oil. The journal ‘Pharmacology’ says:
“No signs of toxicity or serious side effects have been observed following chronic administration of cannabidiol to healthy volunteers (Cunha et al., Pharmacology 21:175-185, 1980), even in large acute doses of 700 mg/day (Consroe et al., Pharmacol. Biochem. Behav. 40:701-708, 1991)”
But with so many people who want to explore the reported benefits of cannabinoids looking for non-psychoactive hemp oils, potentially dangerous butane extractions are common, and sometimes Hashish Oil is passed off as Hemp Oil.
Hemp oil is safe provided:
It really is hemp oil
The plants are grown and handled according to best practice
It has been extracted using safe methods such as supercritical CO2 extraction.
It is possible to obtain such quality controlled hemp oils from Endoca, along with certifications to prove all claims. If you want the benefits of medical marijuana without the side-effects, we encourage you to do your own research and be very cautious about what you buy.
