The conference is one of the largest in Europe with a raft of 60 international teachers, 20 yoga styles and over 800 participants coming from all five continents.
But reading this you might ask yourself the question – ‘what the heck has hemp CBD oil got to do with yoga’?
Cannabis and Shiva
Cannabis, otherwise known as Hemp (the same plant but with without the psychoactive component), has been grown for over 10,000 years and was one of the first plants to be cultivated by humans and spun into useable fibre.
The earliest mention of cannabis has been found in The Vedas, or sacred Hindu texts. They call cannabis ‘a source of happiness, joy-giver, liberator that was compassionately given to humans to help us attain delight and lose fear’. The god, Shiva is frequently associated with cannabis, called bhang in India.
It is only in recent times that the cultivation and consumption of Cannabis has been prohibited and its healing qualities denied.

Yoga and the Endocannabinoid System
While some yogis think cannabis can be a distraction away from Samadhi or union with the divine, both yoga and cannabis actually interact with one of the body’s most important physiological systems: the endocannabinoid system.
A vast network of chemical compounds and receptors throughout the body, it regulates everything from the stress response, immune function, pain management and inflammation.
The Endocannabinoid system’s name comes from the plant Cannabis Sativa as scientists discovered that the body produces its own natural form of cannabis that, just like the plant, brings about relaxation and a sense of calm. Indeed the first endocannabinoid compound to be discovered Anandamide, derives its name from the sanskrit word for joy, Ananda.
So that feeling of being blissed out while lying on your mat in Savasana is down to your body’s own endocannabinoid system doing its stuff. Amazing, right?
What does Cannabis do in the body?
Cannabis contains over 80 cannabinoids – including THC, the psychoactive compound mostly affecting the central nervous system and like Anandamide attaching to the CB1 receptor and CBD – completely non-psychoactive with a whole variety of therapeutic benefits such as reducing inflammation, easing anxiety and depression, plus aiding focus and concentration.
CBD – feel the benefits of cannabis without getting high
Unlike THC, CBD does not bind as such to the endocannabinoid receptors, but indirectly stimulates endogenous cannabinoid signaling and enhancing the body’s own protective endocannabinoid response.
CBD can be found in hemp, which is essentially the Cannabis plant, but with very low THC and therefore no psychoactivity. Legally grown across the world, it is an excellent source of CBD (plus Omega 3 and 6) and for those not lucky enough to live in a state or country where cannabis can be legally taken for medical purposes, provides a safe option that doesn’t leave people open to prosecution.
What could CBD do for your yoga practice?
CBD rich hemp and cannabis oil, contrary to what many people might imagine, actually focuses the mind, making it easier to come into the present moment, aiding that divine union between mind, body and spirit. Not only that, its anti-inflammatory and pain relieving qualities can ease aching muscles and tight joints in order to move deeper into yoga poses.
