It’s fairly simple to treat a wound on your leg. Your body has ways of alerting you to any issue that is wrong within or outside of your body when there are physical signifiers.
For instance, when you have a fall, say off your bike, you will first notice pain, perhaps an open wound in the skin, then blood will start to well and spill, after which you may feel a slight stinging or something a bit more pervasive, signaling to you and your body that you have sustained an injury that needs attention.
But for those silent illnesses—the invisible ailments that don’t have those obvious physical signifiers telling you and others around you that your body has sustained an injury or developed an illness—it can be all the more confusing for the sufferer, and perplexing for their family and their friends.
This is something 26 year-old Charlotte* knows all too well.
Before her diagnosis, Charlotte had been a completely different person. She was bubbly, energetic, ran track in high school; and when she became old enough, flew the nest to go travelling, backpacking and camping in incredible dreamlike places. This, in dramatic contrast with how she would end up just a few years later, walking through her doctor’s office to find out what had gone wrong.
Her symptoms weren’t immediately obvious, so when she was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis Autoimmune Disorder (HTAD) it came as one of the biggest shocks of her life, and was completely incomprehensible to her family.
HTAD is a genetic disorder that can be brought on by stress or illness and is defined by the way the sufferer’s immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid glands (hypothyroidism). This slowly reduces the thyroid glands’ ability to produce hormones and can create some devastating symptoms. Just to give you an idea, the thyroid gland’s hormones regulate vital body functions, including breathing, heart rate, central and peripheral nervous systems, body weight, muscle strength, menstrual cycles, body temperature and cholesterol levels… just to name a few.
The symptoms can be incredibly pervasive, affecting everything from energy levels, weight, skin, and even the reproductive system; and can markedly reduce the sufferer's ability to perform everyday tasks, work or maintain relationships.
So, to counteract the effects that hyperthyroidism was having on her body and psychology, Charlotte’s doctor prescribed the usual hormone therapy medication; which is actually desiccated pig thyroid called Armour. But Charlotte soon realised just how toxic this was for her, with her mental and physical reactions becoming increasingly terrifying; to her as well as to her family and friends.
“It made my symptoms worse. It was so scary. I got even weaker and the worst part was I did not feel like myself anymore. I felt fake and that really upset and scared me to think I would never feel like myself again.”
On top of her HTAD symptoms, she was now forced to deal with the mental side-effects of a drug that her doctor assured her was the only other option for her symptoms.
For many people with chronic illness, day-to-day life means deciding whether living with the symptoms of their affliction is that little bit less exhausting, painful and terrifying than taking the prescription medication their doctor has assured is their only alternative. And so it was for Charlotte.
On the one hand, she understood that without this medication, she would be forced to deal with incredible fatigue, difficulty focusing, weakness, depression and anxiety plus much else, but the alternative? It was just inconceivable.
So, slowly Charlotte started looking into other options; alternatives she knew her doctor would never suggest due to the powerful chokehold big pharma has on the medical industry worldwide. She found natural options and began on supplements of vitamin D, Iron and fish oil, along with other more natural alternative therapies like Japanese acupuncture. This was to give her the relief she sought without those torturous side effects she’d once assumed she would live with for the rest of her life.
But, this wasn’t quite enough. Still, she suffered, continuing to endure symptoms which ultimately mitigated her ability to support herself through work, requiring her to apply for financial help from the government on the Social Security Disability scheme, though she has not yet been able to acquire it.
She explains, “I have to rely on others for help and usually it is toxic and people take advantage and don’t understand the Hashimoto’s Disorder, because you can’t see it like you could a broken leg, but the Hashimoto’s sufferer feels it and is generally debilitated by it.”
She believes it is this lack of understanding from those around her that adds all the more overwhelmingly to her feelings of depression, anxiety and lack of autonomy. It wasn’t until her friends spoke to her about CBD, that her outlook on life changed to something much more optimistic, and even confident.
Charlotte was already experiencing positive changes with her other therapies but wanted something a little more. Something to help ease the inflammation and pain she still felt all over her body as well as aid in her mental stability. She found Endoca CBD Hemp Oil, as well as Endoca’s Whipped Body Butter which she expected, would target both the mental and physical symptoms in one fell swoop.
Charlotte explains, “The CBD oil helped calm my anxiety, and gave me an energy boost unlike I’ve felt before.” With these issues being some of the most debilitating, it did much to improve Charlotte’s general wellbeing, allowing her to move forward and think of her life like she hadn’t for some years.
She says that now that she has attained more relief than she ever imagined, she has been able to think of a future that isn’t stunted in illness, symptom relief and daily mental and physical anguish. Charlotte’s whole outlook has changed now, from one of enduring oppression to now expressing ideas for a future she thought out of reach, “I hope to heal and become a Japanese Acupuncturist and a professional dancer someday.” CBD, she explains, has been an integral factor in allowing her to begin to conceive of a future free from constant pain.
She says, “This is not the life I wished for me but CBD has given me hope because of it’s powerful healing effects.”
