CBD has been changing the lives of countless people all over the world. At Endoca, we are in a position to be able to hear so many inspiring, miraculous stories of the individuals who share their CBD journeys with us.
One such story is Poppy’s, who through a caring community was capable of reaching a most incredible endeavour. When we come together to aid our colleagues, neighbours, friends and family in times of need, it can be incredible to see what changes can be made. Kerryn found this out when her daughter Poppy was first diagnosed with Pachygyria at the age of just two.
Pachygyria is not a well-known condition. In fact, it took two wrong diagnosis, MRI scans, and many days and nights spent in anguish over the health of their daughter before Kerryn was given the correct diagnosis for Poppy. Pachygyria is a very rare condition where gyri (the ridges between the wrinkles in the brain) are flat and broad where they should have deep convolutions and grooves, formed by “infolding” of the cerebral cortex.
Signs and symptoms of Pachygyria vary greatly from person to person and can be difficult to diagnose in infants, which is why after months of going between doctors and hospitals, Kerryn finally received the diagnosis that would change their family forever.
Poppy was unable to walk, talk or even eat properly, and suffered from seizures as well. Information about Poppy’s condition was incredibly limited, and though their doctors gave what information they could, relying on this alone just wasn’t sufficient for Kerryn and her family. So they reached out through Facebook and found a group for parents with children with Pachygyria, giving Kerryn and her family the community and the resources to give Poppy the best chance they could.
After much research, they found a practice in Detroit, U.S.A, where Poppy could be treated with TheraSuit therapy, which would help to teach her how to control motor functions; with the hope of her eventually being able to walk. Stopping off in L.A, Kerryn and Poppy’s older sister took little Poppy to Disney World to enjoy some time before a month of intense treatment were to begin.
This intense treatment saw Poppy in a Therasuit, which is an orthotic designed to improve and change proprioception (pressure from the joints, ligaments, muscles), reduce patient's pathological reflexes, restore physiological muscle synergies (proper patterns of movement), and load the entire body with weight (process similar to a reaction of our muscles to the gravitational forces acting up us for 24 hours).
She was also to spend 6 hours a day in physical therapy as well as Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for three weeks. This particular therapy enhances the body's natural healing process by inhalation of 100% oxygen in a total body chamber, where atmospheric pressure is increased and controlled.
But after a short time of therapy, Poppy began waking during the night, screaming as if she were in incredible pain. Kerryn would try to settle her back down, but it would take hours before Poppy was calm enough to go back to sleep.
It was then that Poppy went to see a neurologist back in Australia, who discovered the reason to why Poppy was experiencing such agonising sleepless nights. The neurologist found that Poppy was experiencing seizures during the night and prescribed Epilim; a drug used in the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorders.
After five years, they could finally see that Poppy was beginning to sleep properly, and thought she was happy. But they soon found that Epilim had side-effects that were becoming increasingly dire.
“Yes it [Epilim] controlled her [Poppy’s] seizures but the side effects were: communicating frustration that would lead to screaming, crying, biting, scratching, pinching and pulling hair. Her anger would become like a rage and she would damage things in our house (like lifting up and slamming a heavy TV onto the floor). We would try and wrap her up in a weighted blanket so she couldn’t hurt those around her and herself, but her strength was to much for us and we couldn’t control her.”
For three years, Poppy was in a ‘fog’ that these drugs were producing. She couldn’t understand much of what anyone communicated to her, which would cause confusion, stress and a general disconnect between Poppy and her family. Not only that, but Epilim’s deep red colour was staining Poppy’s teeth, leaving them with an unnatural reddish hue.
As Poppy’s voice, Kerryn couldn’t continue allowing her daughter to experience this stunted life. Going to their doctor about these side-effects only produced further prescriptions that Kerryn and the family just didn’t want to think about. These drugs had already produced such terribly negative side-effects, which to see in someone so young was agonizing in itself. So it had come to a point that in order for Poppy to try to live a somewhat normal life, Kerryn had to search for something else; something that would allow her daughter a better quality of life.
“I asked her [Poppy’s] neurologist about CBD oil and at this stage it wasn’t legal in Australia and she wasn’t considered bad enough to go on a trial that was being offered. I researched and found Endoca and they were so helpful in answering my questions and I liked the fact it is a pharmaceutical grade.”
With their doctor’s approval, they began Poppy on Endoca RAW 15% CBD+CBDa Hemp Oil. From the first drop they saw a marked improvement; something they had not expected so quickly. Poppy had no seizures, and was able to sleep through the night without a hiccup.“After 5 weeks we noticed that the “fog” was gone. Her school reported how much she was learning. She is now walking, running, can say a few words and doesn’t appear to be in any pain. She used to have pain in her legs from tight muscles as well and this has gone!”
This incredible change was just too good to ignore. With the help of the online community she found through Facebook, as well as the much needed assistance that Endoca provided throughout the whole process, Poppy and her family had found what they so greatly needed.
Taking three drops of Endoca CBD Hemp oil in the morning and night has given Poppy a quality of life that she and her family had almost given up on. Now, they are relishing this new lease on the life given to them through the benefits of CBD.
“We are extremely happy that we found Endoca products, as we now have our little girl back. It is disappointing that not more states in Australia have been legalised as this product is natural, grown from the earth and has no side effects, why would we want to give her something that isn’t natural!!”
