Two of the seven Stanley brothers attended the buzzing Erewhon health foods market in LA recently. The brothers are famous for developing the strain of cannabis known as Charlotte’s Web.
LA Weekly chatted to the Stanley brothers from Colorado who first called the low THC strain of cannabis, very aptly, “hippies’ disappointment”. It would certainly be a disappointment to anyone who thought it would get him or her “high”!
Charlotte’s Web, the strain of cannabis or hemp, contains only 0.3% THC, the psychoactive compound found in strains of cannabis used for euphoric effects. It is very high in cannabidiol, also known as CBD. This compound found in cannabis has anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, anti-psychotic, analgesic and anticonvulsant effects.
CBD protects the brain from degenerative disease
The Stanley brothers firmly believe in the ability of CBD to protect the brain from diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or dementia. What is more, the National Institute of Health (NIH) seems to agree, as they issued a patent (#6630507), in 1998 for cannabinoids as neuroprotectants as well as antioxidants. The NIH believed CBD could be used after damage to the brain by ischemic insults such as strokes or trauma, or for treating neurodegenerative diseases.
That is why brother Joel Stanley says he takes CBD every day, and research backs his belief. He mentions research implying that CBD as a supplement will keep him from loosing his mind to any of these diseases.

Government patent and farm bill
The government patent and the US Farm Bill of 2014 section 7606 gives backing to growers and researchers to keep looking into the medicinal benefits of CBD.
Charlotte’s Web is named after the little girl, Charlotte Figi, who suffered from a severe form of epilepsy, Dravet Syndrome. Her parents reported she went from 400 seizures a week to one or zero after using the CBD oil given to her by the Stanley brothers from Colorado. She stopped taking conventional anti-convulsion medication, only relying on cannabidiol oil. The Stanley brothers renamed the plant in honor of her.
The parents of many other children with severe epilepsy have given anecdotal evidence of CBD keeping seizures at bay, and the Stanley brothers took on an epic task to get the medicine to hundreds of children who suffer from severe epilepsy in Colorado. While Charlotte’s Web doesn’t cure epilepsy, it helps thousands of children to reduce or completely stop seizures.
Seven brothers and one little girl
Brother Josh, (all the brothers’ names start with J) says he takes CBD for clarity and energy. He says he can’t take it at night because it sometimes keeps him awake. He refers to Dr. Ruth Galili from Israel, who found CBD alleviates mental trauma with hardly any side effects after she conducted a behavioral health study.
Charlotte’s Web can’t be doubted
The therapeutic anti-inflammatory effect of CBD obtained from Charlotte’s Web is also well known. When the Stanley brothers were asked if they are worried about the legalities of the cannabinoid, the answer was clear: “Not at all, there can be no more doubt in the proven benefits of CBD.” The train is going full steam. There is absolutely no stopping it, they say.
