We often use the names hemp oil and CBD oil interchangeably and forget that there can be, in fact, a difference between the two. So we’ve created a guide to help you work out why one differs from the other. Sit back and relax, while we walk you through the basics of CBD vs. hemp oil.
What is The Difference?
Bottom line is that the difference between hemp oil and CBD oil is found in where they’re each extracted. While hemp oil is always extracted from the hemp plant, CBD oil can be extracted from both hemp and marijuana plants. A good little reminder is that hemp oil is always CBD oil, whereas CBD oil is not necessarily hemp oil.
What comes from this is two different oils with a ton of different abilities and purposes. Let’s dive in and find out the how and the why of it all. Now, one thing at a time.

What is Hemp?
Hemp oil is derived from the hemp. Industrial hemp is a strain of cannabis sativa that contains low amounts of THC (the part of cannabis that gets you high) at 0.2%-03 %. In return, it contains high levels of CBD (the natural compound that has an extensive list of naturally-occurring vitamins along with several health benefits). For this reason, most CBD and hemp oils on the wider market are derived from industrial hemp.
Hemp oil extracts come from the flowers, leaves and sometimes the seeds of the hemp plant. This is why we often talk of both hemp oil and hemp seed oil in the same breath. Hemp seed oil, however, does not contain CBD or THC, making it a different type of oil, which mainly used for cooking and skincare.
Aside from the dozens of cannabinoids that the hemp plant contains, these are some of the many goodies that can also be found in the hemp plant, making it a powerhouse for consumers:
- Essential vitamins
- Omega 3 fatty acids
- Omega 6 fatty acids
- Other non-psychoactive compounds
What Does Hemp Oil Do?
For some time now, hemp has been considered a valuable addition to our health and wellness routine. Aside from being nutritionally rewarding, hemp oil has a long line of potential benefits that can help a wide range of things.
In order to break it down a bit, we decided to list 4 good reasons why jumping aboard the hemp oil train might be beneficial to you:
You’ll probably be surprised to find out that hemp’s content consists of 20% protein. This is good news for us, as the amino acids that are found in protein help us do essential maintenance work on things like tissues, bones, muscles, cartilage, and skin. Simply put, the protein found in hemp oil helps us build and repair our bodies.
2) Fatty Acids
Even though it would make things a lot easier, our bodies are not capable of producing omega 3 and omega 6 on their own. These fatty acids are important for all growth and repair that goes on in the human body, as they help fix our cell membranes and at the same time contribute to the regulation of both blood pressure and inflammation.
We’re staying with the fatty acids for now. Gamma-linoleic Acid (GLA) is another important omega 6 fatty acid that is found in hemp. This helps control things like inflammation and body temperature and is therefore highly valuable to all of us. Aside from that, GLA also helps harmonize your hormonal balance while improving your skin and increasing your energy levels.

You’ve probably heard it before, but your gut flora is first in line when it comes to your immune defense. Thanks to the essential fatty acids found in the oil, hemp oil can help promote a ‘good’ flora in your gut. Keeping your intestinal flora healthy also helps the rest of your body stay healthy, as good gut flora helps you control things like cholesterol levels, high blood sugar, and general digestion.
What is CBD Oil?
CBD oil is derived from the cannabis sativa plant but can be either extracted from the Marijuana strain or the hemp strain. CBD is abundant in both strains. However, THC is also found in higher amounts in the Marijuana strain and can reach levels of almost 30% THC.
The most potent CBD is located in the flowers and the leaves of the plant. These are simply the places with the highest concentration of cannabinoids in the plant. Not only does CBD contain an extensive list of vitamins such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E, but CBD is also believed to be a great supplement to a balanced lifestyle.
We can find more than 120 different cannabinoid compounds in the cannabis plant. For the time being, the two most popular ones continue to be CBD and THC. CBD is free of the psychoactive effects that THC has and will therefore not give you the feeling of a “high”.
A key factor in understanding what effects cannabinoids have in our bodies has to do with the endocannabinoid system.
What is the Endocannabinoid system?
Simply put, the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a network of chemical compounds and receptors that act to maintain homeostasis or balance within our body and mind. This is located all throughout our bodies and has the task of regulating many of our bodies’ physiological responses and systems such as mood, appetite, sleep, and pain response.
CBD oil comes into the picture as something that acts as a natural supplement for supporting the health of our ECS. Not only does the ECS manage the cannabinoids that are consumed, but it also produces cannabinoids on its own.
