CBD and Inflammation
Inflammation affects everyone from time to time. It is the body’s immune defense response to what it deems as an attack on the body and is a vital part of the body’s immune function. Whether it is from an injury or for fighting off infection, inflammation is a vital part of the body’s natural functions. But in some cases, inflammation can work against us, developing into chronic conditions such as arthritis, asthma and even irritable bowel syndrome.
Many who suffer from chronic inflammatory illnesses are prescribed anti-inflammatory medication, but these can have dire side-effects. Thankfully, new research coming to the fore on cannabidiol (CBD) seems to be a promising, emerging remedy for those suffering from chronic inflammatory illnesses. In recent years, CBD has been commended by many, including athletes, arthritis sufferers and those afflicted with any inflammatory related disease, for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.

Arthritis Sufferers Rejoice
So by now, we all know what CBD is, but how can it help with inflammatory diseases? Scientific research into CBD is a relatively new field, but many studies pertain to the positive effects it has on inflammation especially. Arthritis is one of these inflammatory diseases that CBD has shown promising results in relieving. Currently, arthritis affects over 50 million people in the US alone. It can be a debilitating condition that eventually deteriorates the joints, cartilage and bone, causing inflammation and pain.
Most people who suffer from arthritis take modern medication to combat this disease, but this often times means dealing with side-effects that can be worse than the pain created by the disease itself. So, many are now turning to CBD oil to alleviate pain and inflammation. In one 2016 study, data indicated “that topical CBD application has therapeutic potential for relief of arthritis pain-related behaviours and inflammation without evident side effects”. A more recent study from 2017 found “that local administration of CBD blocked osteoarthritis (OA) pain” and that “prophylactic CBD treatmentment prevented the later development of pain and nerve damage in these OA joint”. These findings suggest that CBD may be a safe and useful therapy for treating OA pain.
This is welcome news for those living with osteoarthritis, as it shows potential as a substitute for some modern medications (and their horrible side effects), while still being able to alleviate the symptoms of chronic inflammation; all with natural and efficacious CBD oil.
How Can CBD Help Inflammatory Bowel Disease?
So far, all the research done into CBD suggests that cannabidiol is an efficacious and proficient product used to relieve the symptoms for quite a number of illnesses and general issues. So how exactly does it help with inflammation of the bowel? In one study focused on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that tested on both human biopsies and on mice, it was found that “cannabinoids suppress inflammatory response and subsequently attenuate disease symptoms”. This is because of its ability to inhibit the enzyme fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH); the enzyme responsible for the hydrolysis of anandamide (the endogenous mimic of THC). FAAH inhibition results in an intestinal anti-inflammatory effect, which has led many scientists to assert to the efficacy of CBD in relation to IBD symptoms; and making the link between CBD use and its role in FAAH inhibition.
With inflammation being a major component of inflammatory bowel diseases, this finding is an exciting and emblematic prognosis for the potential benefits of CBD used for those suffering from Crohn's disease, Colitis and other IBD related illnesses.
CBD - an Emerging Remedy for Sports Injuries
Many of those who have reported positive outcomes from using CBD products to treat inflammation and associated pain are professional athletes. A number of athletes are now using CBD and can attest to its efficacy in treating their old injuries, both for its purported healing and its anti-inflammatory properties. One athlete, Nate Diaz, attests to the benefits of CBD for healing and recovery.
As a professional UFC fighter, Diaz shocked reporters when he openly vaped CBD at a press conference in 2016. He said that “it helps with the healing process and inflammation and things like that, so you want to get these for before or after the fights, in training. It’ll make your life a better place”.
Another athlete also on the CBD bandwagon is Jake Plummer, a retired NFL player, who uses CBD daily. He claimed that it is responsible for giving him a full life after football. “My old injured joints now feel inflammation free… and [I] feel like my whole system operates more efficiently,” he told HoneyColony via Twitter.
And he’s not the only one. Many more have come forward to attest to the benefits they have gained from CBD. Another like Plummer and Diaz is Tyler Hurst, a runner, writer and cannabis enthusiast, who believes in the benefits of using cannabis for recovery. Regarding CBD, “I’ve recovered faster in the past year than I ever have before, all while running longer and eating the same,” Hurst said while talking with Fuel Running, a dedicated running website.
Does CBD for Inflammation Really Work?
Although studies continue to emerge with findings that attest to the promising benefits of CBD oil and inflammation, companies that sell CBD products are not allowed to make any specific medical claims. This is because all clinical studies on CBD so far have been performed on animal subjects rather than on humans, and therefore sellers of CBD cannot legally claim any scientifically reported benefits for humans. But, with hoards of anecdotal evidence available online and through word-of-mouth, people everywhere are starting to abandon the outdated stereotypes attached to cannabis. More and more people are jumping on board with CBD as a potentially life-altering, emerging health and wellbeing product and are finding solace in CBD as an alternative to overprescribed modern medications.
