The Buenos Aires Herald published an article on legislation being passed to approve the use of CBD oil in the public health system. Chubut is the first province in South America to allow cannabis into the healthcare system.
CBD oil for epilepsy is about to become a part of the public healthcare system in the southern Argentinean province of Chubut.
Legislation designed by Governor Mario Das Neves was recently passed by the Legislature. Legilsator Gutavo Fita is seen as the driving force behind the bill being approved by the provincial legislature. The bill was approved by 15 votes for the law, while a few legislators abstained.
Fita, of the Victory Front, (FpV) said he was very pleased to know that families in need of cannabis oil to treat seizures in Dravet Syndrome can obtain it much more easily in future. The seizures caused by this condition in very young children are severe, and could cause brain damage. The onset of seizures usually begins within the first year from birth.

Epilepsy patient inspired the bill
One of the reasons Fita advocated passage of the legislation is because of a patient called Micaela who suffered severe debilitating seizures. Conventional treatment could not bring her any relief. She was taking 27 pills a day, and still experienced up to 10 seizures lasting up to 35 minutes daily.
Her mom discovered cannabis oil as an alternative. She hesitated at first, but managed to acquire it legally through an importation process that took a lot of paperwork, and a trip to the Customs office in Buenos Aires. Once the CBD oil was given to Micaela the seizures immediately dropped to 1 or 2 a week, and are much less severe.
The bill provides epilepsy patients, and those with other conditions that the provincial health minister may later approve, the right to access cannabidiol (CBD) with specific mention being made of Charlotte’s web.
The oil will be imported from the US, and will become part of the public healthcare system in Chubut, the first jurisdiction to allow cannabis into the healthcare system.
Healthcare cover for CBD oil for epilepsy
Unlike any medical marijuana program in the states, the CBD law of Chubut will allow health insurance to cover the costs of the CBD oil. In the US, this can’t be allowed, because federal law still considers marijuana to have no medical value, and therefore insurers are prevented from including cannabis in the range of medication covered.
There is no doubt said Fita, that this will bring those who suffer from epilepsy closer to a medicine that works. The use of cannabis is accepted through many parts of Argentina, but to date, there have been no laws in place to protect patients who use the herb as a medicine.
CBD oil for epilepsy
An oil obtained from a non-intoxicating strain of cannabis containing less than 0.3% THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis, will be distributed in public hospitals for epilepsy patients requiring the treatment.
It seems the use of CBD oil for epilepsy is at last becoming recognized all over the world. We can only hope that the accepted use of CBD oil for other conditions will soon to follow.
