Caring for a sick loved one is perhaps the most stressful job any of us will ever have. Their health and comfort becomes our greatest concern, while the well-being of the carer often goes out the window. But a stressed and exhausted carer is no use to anyone.
That’s why it’s vital to make sure you care for yourself as well as the person you are looking after. Step in CBD oil, which not only calms stress and anxiety, but can also regulate sleep and renew energy.
Carers - The Silent Heroes
I have a newfound respect for anyone caring round-the-clock for a family member. It’s a new experience for me and one that nothing could ever have prepared me for. On the one hand, there’s the mental anguish of seeing someone you dearly love suffer. Then there’s the relentless schedule of cooking, cleaning, washing, and constantly being on the lookout for any small change in their condition.
It’s only been a few weeks for me. I can’t begin to imagine what it must be like caring for someone with a long-term health condition. But what I do know is that being a full-time carer is often upsetting and mostly stressful. In fact I wake up feeling stressed, with a kind of tightness in my body and mind. Sometimes it literally feels like my blood pressure is skyrocketing, especially when I’m worrying about an impending future when they are no longer there.
BUT - being a medical cannabis writer, I am lucky enough to always be near a stash of CBD oil. This is where some people might shout, “Heh, CBD is for sick people, right, why are you taking it?”

CBD Oil = Self-Care
And you’d be totally right to ask that. It’s true many people with long-term health problems such as autoimmune diseases, chronic pain or cancer take CBD oil to help with their symptoms. But I really want to emphasise that those doing the caring should also give CBD oil a go.
In my case, when I get that anxious tightness in my chest, I’ve been reaching for 20% CBD paste, which pretty instantaneously calms my nervous system and helps me feel relaxed and able to cope. I’ve also noticed my body’s been feeling more tense, setting off the sciatica I get from time to time. So at night, I have been availing of a CBD suppository, which seems to keep the inflammation and pain at bay as well as help me sleep more soundly.
Health Dangers Of Stress
We often write about the effects of chronic stress on our health. Indeed, it’s widely accepted that long-term stress can make us more susceptible to depression and anxiety, heart problems, sleep disorders, autoimmune disease, and even cancer.
I know that I must do what I can to mitigate against the effects on my health created by this intensely emotional experience, not just to get through each day, but also knowing there will be a day when I’m no longer a carer. After all, studies show bereavement increases the incidence of heart attacks by sixfold and a quarter of people who lose their partner suffer clinical depression in the first year after their death.
Take Care Of Yourself
So it’s super important to implement self-care right now by giving yourself permission to switch off. For me, it’s taking a walk with the dog, speaking to friends on the phone, and doing yoga or meditating. While it’s tempting to have a glass of wine, emotional stress and alcohol are not always the best combination. If you can, seriously think about taking CBD oil as a safe way to relax your body and mind.
If you are a carer, from the bottom of my heart, I salute you. Please be kind to yourself and remember to leave some petrol in the tank.
Or if you know someone in this situation, why not send them this article or you could even gift them some CBD oil drops to show that you care.
