Anxiety is prevalent in our stressful society. Stats say 1 in every 10 people suffer from anxiety at some stage in their life. Many people suffer in silence, while others take prescription medication. The problem is, it works for some people, but not for everyone, and this is where a natural alternative would be a healthy option.
Many sufferers are not aware that CBD, or cannabidiol, in cannabis is non-psychotropic, and the possible alternative to powerful and potentially dangerous medication. These days, most people have an opinion about cannabis, but in its most natural state, it is still a Class B substance in the UK. If caught with it, an offender could land up with a 5-year prison sentence, and if caught dealing, people could be put behind bars for 14 years.
Drug Policy Reform for UK
Many people are discovering the medicinal validity of cannabis for chronic illnesses such as pain and spasms, as well as reducing nausea and vomiting when treated with chemo says Netdoctor.
The All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Drug Policy Reform claims there is more than enough evidence on cannabis having therapeutic value in many conditions, but the Home Office is adamant it has no plan to legalize it. Sativex for MS is the only legal medicine containing cannabis in the UK.
However, Cannabidiol, better known as CBD, is completely legal to buy in the UK, and won’t make you high.

Leading neurologist commissioned
Professor Michael Barnes a leading neurologist was commissioned by APPG on Drug Policy Reform to write a report, and is convinced that with a little bit more knowledge, cannabis could revolutionize medical practice. He is hopeful that medicinal use will become legal in the UK soon.
He says there are plus minus 90 chemical compounds found in cannabis that bind to receptors in the brain. The two most important ones are THC and CBD; THC is the psychoactive component that makes recreational users high. It also has therapeutic properties, and is helpful in treating spasm and pain. CBD causes no high, but seems to have an anti-anxiety effect.
He says there are at least four sound studies suggesting CBD reduces severe anxiety. It is worth pointing out that CBD is not illegal. It is a remarkably safe drug, which doctors don’t know about, so they don’t recommend it, says Professor Barnes.
He got interested in cannabis as a neurological rehabilitator because in his field, pain and spasticity are very common after a stroke or brain injury. Some of his patients admitted that they use the illegal drug because they found it really helped. Because so many of his patients have told him they used it, he has become involved in the development of a cannabis-based prescription medicine.
CBD vs. Valium
Professor Barnes soon discovered CBD might be the answer to anxiety. But when asked how CBD compares to prescription medicine his answer was that no one knows because no comparative studies have been conducted. Not yet, anyway.
He said he would hope CBD could replace some prescription medicines, as they have a lot of serious side effects. The professor says he would guess CBD could most definitely be used for mild anxiety, and that perhaps more severe psychiatric anxiety would need more powerful medication.
CBD is available in a wide variety of products, and can be purchased as oil and used in liquid drops at a variety of strengths, or even as a lip balm. Studies that have been done were on severe anxiety, and dosage for mild anxiety is unclear.
As knowledge is gained more knowledge will come
Professor Barnes says CBD could be helpful before stressful situations such as exams or flights. He says as soon as more knowledge on the use of CBD for anxiety and other mental conditions are known, more knowledge can come.
He concludes by saying “I think CBD is a potentially very useful product and a very safe product. And I think we just need to basically know and understand more about it than we do at the moment. The initial evidence is enough for me to say that it should be used.”
CBD oil for anxiety
CBD oil for anxiety: if it is good enough for Professor Barnes as a neuroscientist, it is good enough for me. Say no more! Where can we find some lip balm?
