This International Pet’s Day we thought we would highlight the special relationship that we share with our furry best friends and how their quality of life impacts our relationship with them. Could CBD for Dog epilepsy be the answer?
Ask any pet owner and they’ll tell you that having a fur baby is one of the most fulfilling and satisfying experiences you can have. You know there will be bumps in the road but you’re an animal lover, so you understand it will be all worth the reward.
One of our community members Vicky, found this more than ever with her Terik. A handsome dark coated Rottweiler with big brown eyes and an even bigger heart. Terik was a breeze to be with, and at just two years of age, he still seemed to be a happy puppy.
Terik the Rottweiler puppy
However, when Terik was just two and a half years old, he began having hip issues and was diagnosed with hip dysplasia and arthritis. This was just one hiccup Vicky was to face among the many trials and tribulations attached to pet ownership.
On a day like any other, Vicky stepped out of the house with Terik for a morning walk. Almost immediately though, Vicky noticed some strange behavior from her young pup.
“He was very restless and before leaving the porch of my house, he started displaying a tic in his face, and suddenly he fell to the ground and started convulsing.”
Terik was rushed straight to the vet where Vicky was given the news that her sweet young pup had idiopathic epilepsy. This kind of epilepsy is understood to be a genetic issue, though has no understood cause.
So, Vicky left the veterinary clinic with her hands plied with bottle after bottle of little pharmaceutical pills that she was obliged to give Terik.
Just to save his life. She says that Terik was on “22 pills a day. A mixture of barbiturates to control the epileptic fits, and blood tests every three months, because they create a lot of toxicity in the liver.”
So now picture this: think about the vitamins that you take in the morning. Maybe you take one. Or perhaps even two or three. One might be a big orange one, the other oval and green. Now imagine taking 10 or 20 times your regular dose every single day. And remember, this isn’t just regular vitamins. Rather heavy laden pharmaceutical drugs, some of which were even meant for human consumption.
So while Terik’s true placid nature held on throughout the drama, Vicky was unable to be comforted by his positive outlook, while she witnessed the sharp decline in her pup’s quality of life. This continued for some years with no improvements. Managing Terik’s condition seemed the only way forward if forward was what you could call it.

Can CBD Help with the Symptoms of Dog Epilepsy?
It wasn’t until her own mother became ill with cancer that she recognized there may be another way. CBD, an extract from the hemp plant might be the answer to bringing her Terik the quality of life he deserved. “I had nothing to lose. No worries, being something that is natural."
“I saw the tranquility that it [CBD] gave my mother. It calmed the pain a lot, and she could rest. So I thought it had to be ideal for my dog, since a lot of epileptic seizures are caused by states of anxiety and the nervous system.”
So Vicky began Terik on the 3% Raw capsules, integrating the hemp capsules into his food. This however proved to be a difficult mode of administration. Terik would bite into the capsules, and on the first earthy burst of hemp, he would spit the remnants out immediately.
So Vicky moved onto the 3% oil.“In 30 or 45 minutes it calmed his down symptoms,” though Vicky believed her 38 kg, six-year-old Rottweiler’s condition could be further improved upon with a higher strength extract.
The 15% CBD oil drops seemed to provide the best results, plus, “The ease of using the drops is much better. I only raise his lip on the side and make sure that everything I give him is not lost like with the capsules”.
Using CBD has allowed Vicky to drastically cut Terik’s pills almost in half. She says now that, “Every time there are signs of partial seizures, with the CBD I am able to stop the symptoms and even stop the most serious attacks.”
Vicky’s relief was palpable. She told us plainly, “the best thing in the world is to do everything possible to extend your pets life, and make it as natural as possible.”
Finding a product that was both natural and effective helped Vicky provide her pup with the relief he so needed, allowing his affectionate nature to shine through.
She says that using CBD was a natural choice, “I knew that it was better than all the chemicals that I gave him”. And judging by the improvements Terik has made, Vicky says, “I'm not wrong in doing it.”
