Adenosine is a chemical in our brains and bodies that works to widen the blood vessels and at the same time contributes to keeping a steady heartbeat. Our adenosine levels are at their highest late in the night and early in the morning, which is why a good cup of coffee works wonder in getting us up and out of bed in the morning.

And if one works to block the adenosine uptake while the other wishes to enhance it, then who wins? Let’s take a closer look.
CBD and Caffeine CombinedSeparately, CBD and caffeine have several things in common. They both help to reduce free radicals in the body that can lead to disease and cell damage, and they are both proud containers of mood-boosting components. Among other things, these help boost our serotonin levels; often referred to as our “happy hormones”. Both CBD and caffeine interacts with adenosine and its receptors, however what they try to do is very different. While caffeine blocks the adenosine receptors, CBD tries to delay the neurons’ ability to ‘re-uptake’ adenosine. Knowing that CBD and caffeine aim to affect the same region of the brain, we automatically start to wonder who’s the stronger opponent of the two. Is there a chance that caffeine will simply hit the receptors harder and thereby reduce the receptors’ ability to react to CBD? Maybe, but with that being said, the right amount of CBD can keep that from happening. But we will get back to that later.Let’s first take a look at what happens when the two antioxidant bombs join forces.Adding CBD to your morning coffee might actually help you get rid of the unwanted jitters that sometimes come with a heavy coffee intake. In fact, CBD can help you fight off quite a few of caffeine’s effects on the body. Among these are nausea, anxiety, restlessness, stress, insomnia, bowel problems and heart problems. In other words, adding CBD to your coffee might free you from the caffeine side effects that many of us often struggle with. CBD-Infused Coffee 101
- CBD content is not very heat-friendly and decreases when it’s exposed to high heat. Therefore, don’t add CBD to coffee that’s more than 70 °F. If you do, the CBD might not have an effect..
- Both too small a dose and too high a dose of CBD won’t give a response. A rule of thumb is to add 10 mg to one cup of coffee. There are different doses for different things; a small dose serving as a stimulant and a high dose promoting sedative properties.
- Don’t drink three CBD-infused cups of coffee in a row! A few hours in between intake is preferred, so if you’re one of the morning manics that reach for the coffee as soon as the alarm clock has goes off, remember to only add CBD to one of your cups of joe.
- Mixing CBD and caffeine isn’t thought to be in any way a harmful experience. CBD, however, affects people differently, so there’s only one way to find out how you respond to this popular beverage.
