Published on: 12/22/16David Wells is creating a legacy beyond his perfect baseball pitching skills. He is advocating for CBD oil painkiller as medical marijuana to be used by professional athletes.
Wells never touched another opioid after he discovered CBD oil as painkiller more than three years ago, now he advocates for athletes to have access.
The Post Game speaks to David Wells about his opioid use. Wells says that at the height of his career, when he was playing for Yankees, he was on the opioid, Percocet, 75-80 percent of the time. He used the painkiller after surgery or just to get started and deal with another grinding pitch. Sometimes he would even use it recreationally.
Wells says many athletes use these painkillers for years. He was still on them after he ended his 21-year MLB career in 2007. He finally tried CBD oil painkiller after he watched a 60 Minutes story on a girl in Colorado who suffered 300 seizures a week, and found that it worked to relieve his pain.
Wells says CBD oil changed his life. The after-effects of opioids make you feel terrible, and he wishes he knew about CBD oil when he was still playing, because he would certainly have chosen CBD oil over opioids, he says. He would have taken the risk, and if he tested positive, (this is unlikely owing to low THC levels) he would have taken it to the lab and told them to analyze it and see for themselves what it is all about.

CBD not accepted by leagues
Professional athletes are still subject to penalties from their leagues if they test positive for marijuana. Leading authority on cannabis medicine, Dr. Allan Frankel, says this is an outdated approach, and it should be stopped. He sees a wonderful future for cannabis in sport. He says CBD has been patented for neuro-protection, and it is well known for healing concussion and so many other disorders.
Dr. Frankel is convinced we’re going to be looking back one day, and history will show that giving CBD oil to athletes is the most rational thing we could possibly have done.
“Why in the world would anyone not give CBD to professional athletes?” he asks.
Soldiers in Israel are given CBD for head injuries
Dr. Frankel says soldiers in Israel incurring head injuries on the battlefield, are given CBD right there on the spot. We should be doing the same thing for athletes.
David Wells is so convinced that CBD is the answer to replace painkillers that he has invested in a company, Greensticks, which produces electronic vaporizers for dispensing CBD.
Wells has an active lifestyle, playing golf, hunting and coaching baseball at a high school near his home in San Diego. He has been without opioids for three-and-a-half years. “That’s pretty good,” he says.
CBD oil painkiller
CBD oil as painkiller is effective because of the anti-inflammatory effects of the cannabinoid. It reduces inflammation in joints, which causes most chronic pain in sport injuries.
CBD has all the potential to replace painkillers, changing many athletes’ lives. By using CBD oil, they will be avoiding not only addiction or overdose, but also the negative side effects of opioid use.
